+ Russ Air Tactics Indicate Germans in Position for

Drive Now.

By DAVID M. NICHOL Copyright, 1943, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc. MOSCOW, June 9.—The altered . character of the Russian army's aerial offensive which is based on the most careful reconnaissance, suggests that the Nazis now have troops and supplies in position for whatever it is that Hitler plans to try on this front during the summer. The attacks which began heavily on May 2, for most of the rest of that month were directed against railroad junc-

tions and supply}

1 " depots along all Mr, Nichol the vast network of lines leading toward the front. In one night as many as eight or 410 places would be subjected to Red air force hammering. Toward the end of May and more particularly during June, the attacks tended to be concentrated on supply depots near the front. The largest mass raid yet attempted by the Soviet air force occurred on June 4 against Orel which is virtually part of the German front lines. Five hundred and twenty planes participated in this bombing, the Soviet communique announced.

Germans Open Raids

The Germans, meanwhile, for the first time since the spring of 1942 . are undertaking deep raids into Soviet territory. Not only are bombers concentrating in larger groups but fighter battles are tending to take on the character of mass onslaughts. An expert of Red. Star (army organ) reporting from Kuban says that one development during the bitter air fighting there is the direction by the ground commander of the whole course of battle. Using the radio for giving orders, he checks fuel,’ limits planes and moves reserves to points where they can with the best effect enter the battle at a favorable moment.

KANSAS C. I. 0. MAPS FIGHT AGAINST REED

4 KANSAS CITY, Kas, June 9

(U. P.).—The Kansas state C. I. O. oragnization’s executive board will be urged at its June 20 meeting here to prepare a state-wide campaign against Senator Clyde M. Reed (R. Kas), should he run for re-election to the U. S. senate next summer, Carl L. Stevens, president of the state C. I. O. organization; said today. The senator Saturday sent a blistering reply to Stevens, who also is president of the C. I. O. union local at the North American aviation plant, following Stevens’ telegram “demanding” that Reed cast his vote against the Smith-Connally bill. The aviation local forwarded to Reed by registered mail an equally blistering = letter, approved unanimously at a mass meeting Sunday.

SAY SWEDEN MAKES BARGES FOR NAZIS

STOCKHOLM, June 9 (U. P.).— The syndicalist newspaper Arbetaren yesterday published a picture of one of the 41 motor barges being built for Germany in Sweden. The barge flew the Nazi flag and was represented as being tied at a Stockholm quay. The newspaper quoted a Swedish sailor as saying that he saw many boats of the same type doing escort duty in the Kiel canal. It was recalled that the Swedish foreign office, replying to a British protest some time ago, pointed out that the boats were “fishing barges unsuited for military purposes.”

Of Gas Substitute

BOSTON, June 9 (U. P.).—The Boston Traveler said yesterday that a 54-year-old Meredith, N. H,, spray painter—C. K. Plancon—"has evolved a substitute for gasoline.” : Actually, the newspaper said, “Plancon invented his gasoline substitute two years ago.” The Traveler quotes him: “Funny, I never gave it much thought until now.” The newspaper said: “It works. Motorboats run on it. Automobiles run on it. It's plentiful. It’s cheap—about four cents a gallon. “Surprisingly, Plancon has never used it in his own car or motorboat.”

NAZIS SMASHING BALTIC CULTURE

Failure to ‘Co-operate™ Brings Reprisals From The Gestapo.

By NAT A. BARROWS Copyright, 1943, by The Indianapolis Times and The Chicago Daily News, Inc.

LONDON, June 9.—Angered because the Lithuanians continue to refuse to take a nrore active part in joining the fight against . the Soviet, the German masters of the Baltic states are intensifying their . attempts to crush out Lithuanian culture. Ransacking archives, burning manuscripts and smashing scientific apparatus, gestapo gangs have closed all the universities and libraries and arrested hunMr. BalTOWS foods of Lithuanian intelligentsia. The work of] 40 years in assembling manuscripts for a Lithuanian dictionary has gone up in smoke after the S. S. police invaded the academy of science at Vilna. Some 2000 phonograph records of Lithuanian folk songs have been destroyed in reprisal against recalcitrants,

Veer Toward Russia

Heavy clouds of disillusionment long have been hanging over the Baltic countries, until now all three, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia face the future with dismal prospects. Germany has been methodically stripping the Baltic area of all possible material ever since it drove out the Russians, two years ago, and the early hopes of the Balts that German occupation offered brighter days are now giving way to a more realistic appreciation of their geographical position in the | Soviet sphere of influence.. .I heard from Baltic refugees in Stockholm the recurring opinion that after the war the future of the Baltics lies inevitably with Russia. Further concessions from Russia, particularly regarding Baltic states autonomy, will determine how fully the Baltics will co-operate.

JAP SEES NEED FOR VICTORY THIS YEAR

: Many People Think, Uncomfortable in Hot Weather

Many women suffer from chafed . skin in hot weather. Few women, however, know what tp do about it. Chafing is not caused by the foundation, nor is it strictly speaking a figure problem. But it is a problem and it can be eliminated, which is the reason why we are discussing it here. Chafing is caused by too-tender skin, by excess flesh, by perspiration, by the shape of the figure, i. e., the shape of the figure is such that the legs are close together, and are rubbed against each other in walking.

We have two ‘solutions to t problem—both of them proved successful. First, the solution we sketch — Warner's “CHAFEZE” — a rayon and cotton jersey leg-shield that slips on like a panty; is held in place by soft, easy bands; is cool to the skin and absorbs perspiration, It is worn under the girdle and is so lightweight that after you wear it a few times you won't even know you have it on. It is better than regular panties because it gives you no atided bands around the waist, no extra lines ‘through the body to spoil your silhouette. Chafeze can be rinsed out each night for constant freshness, but it is best and much more convenient to have several so that you will not have to worry _ about washing them every day.

The second solution, equally effective but not shown here, is cur “Midget, Panties”—in rayon crepe with detachable tabs. ‘The oe
