RAMIREZ SEEKS | U.S. CORDIALITY,

: New Retire in in Argentina Pledges Friendship to

a Other Americas.

Li bENoS AIRES, June 9 (U.P). —Argentina’s new’ government - bid' today tor recognition of ‘the United States and other countries with the announcement _ that it will demonstrate with “deeds” its friendship with the other American republics. ™ Official’ communications announc- ' ing establishment of the new government: ‘under President ' Gen. ‘Pedro Ramirez were handed to foreign envoys last night. It was learned that the American embassy

immediately transmitted the com-

munication to the state department at Washington for study and advice. . A precedent for American recognition of a revolutionary government was established in 1930, when Washington recognized a new regime only 10 days after a, revolution overthrew President Hippolito Irigoyen. Foreign Policy Awaited The government’s announcement that “not only words but deeds will strengthen our relations with our sister American nations” promised early clarification of the country’s foreign policy, which Ramirez announced Monday night called for continued neutrality “for the present.” With Argentina now the only nation in the Western Hemisphere

still maintaining relations with the

axis, the question seems to be how

revolutionary

far Ramirez can advance in the| &

“no man’s land” between neuirality and actual rupture of relations with

Germany, Italy and Japan without]

provoking axis reprisals.

WASHINGTON, June 9 (U, P.). —Representatives of the two antiVichy French factions here were cheered today by words of encouragement from Secretary of State Cordell’ Hull as they sought to extend further the unity of their cause. Spokesmen for the two groups said that although the French national council of liberation had been formed in Algiers it would be premature to expect an immediate merging of the organizations which have maintained separate existences in the United States.

Indianapolis’ manpower and womanpower is increased by a potential 22,000 with the dismissal of schools. And the boys and girls under 18 seem to be losing no time in applying for work permits at the school board offices. Of course, a lot of children of working age didn’t wait for the dismissal of schools to seek jobs because about 9000 have obtained permits since last September. That was at the rate of 1000 a month, But 400 were issued yesterday. That's at the rate of about 12,000 a month. All day long now, the line forms in the corridor and winds up the stairs to the application desks. There are certain rules to be met.

These school pupils take another step . . «

400 Obtained Work Permits Yesterday and Line Is Long

Every applicant must present a card

of intent of employment from the

employer. If the job is taken, a duplicate of the card is filed in the state labor division. Every child must apply in person. Each must present ga birth certificate. If under 16 they must present a card of approval signed by parents, Boys between 14 and 16 and girls between 14 and 18 can work only eight hours dajly. If they change jobs they must obtain a new permit. The new applicants include countless June graduates because the state law requires everyone, in school or out, who is under 18 to have a school board permit to work.

CLAIMS BOMBINGS

T0 HASTEN VICTORY

LONDON, June 9 (U. P.).—Lord Selborne, minister of eeonomic war-

fare, said today that continued allied bombing of the Ruhr valley

would greatly hasten the war’s end

and reported that German industria} production already had declined 20 per cent from last year. Ruhr production, Selborne said at a press conference, has. slumped 35 per cent, with 1,000,000 houses in 22 towns of that area destroyed or badly damaged. He said streetcars had not operated in Essen for several weeks and probably would nok be running before July. He estimated $4,000,000 damage to the Krupp arms works.

Slacks, Phooey! Office Girls

At Ford Plant Like Dresses

DETROIT, June 8 (U. P).—The controversy over whether office girls should wear dresses or slacks was kept alive at. the Ford Motor Co.’s. Highland Park plant today when 11 employees turned up wearing dresses because “we want to feel like women!” The dispute started yesterday when 57 girls reported for work wearing dresses. A Ford official ordered them to go home and put on slacks—the trype of dress specified by company regulations. They refused and sat down at their desks. The company, disclaiming any intent to cloak femininity, quickly called a conference with union officials. In the excitement, Mrs. Mable Colt, a company counselor, fell down and broke her wrist. The girls charged discrimination. Right across the hall, they said, 50 women employed by army ordnance wore dresses. “If dresses are good enough for the army,” one striker said, “they ought tos be good enough for the Ford company. We want to feel like ladies.”, “No matter how you look at them, slacks aren’t feminine,” said Wanda Acciacca. “It’s like being wrapped

up in a blanket. We think dresses|p keep up the morale.” The company insisted the only reason the girls were required to wear slacks was because dresses have a tendency to get tangled up in the machinery. Ben Garrison, president of the United Automobile Workers (C. I. 0.) local at the plant, replied tersely: “It is only with extreme difficulty that a girl wearing a dress could get caught in the gears of a typewriter.”
