LITHOUGH IT may be hard to believe, there is a picture making the rod¥ms of the neighborhood aters this week-end in which Orson Welles has only a minor parf. This fact is as unbelievable as n “Journey Into Fear” Welles plays the part of the Turkish secret service agent, whose main busihess it is to protect the person of an American engineer traveling in Turkey, the starring role played

Vaudeville Daze
THE BUSINESS at Keith's this weck-end has the novelty of being tied together by a pair of accomplished clowns, Collins & Peterson. One of them plays the trumpet good and loud and both of them beat the old joke book without -pity. Their act strings through the entire show, going off and on like a dim bulb between the other material in the show. When the act is over, the show is over, too,
and the audience files out, all four of us. All jesting aside, this is a pretty good show. Ed Resner and his merry musicians are on stage weaving out some stompy stuff and the presence of that peerless pair, Collins & Peterson, keeps things from falling apart into little pieces as they ordinarily do. What has become of vaudeville in this town? Time was when this ancient art was playing three to one against the movies, instead of vice versa. Them were the days. You had to go to English’s to see “The Covered Wagon.” The Lyric, the Palace and Keith's were blooming with the three-a-day vaudeville that used to be. Nowadays, one vaudeville house is all the town supports and there seems to be plenty of room in
The answer that the movies have driven vaudeville out doesn’t hold too well, because the folks still like to see their entertainers in the flesh. It isn’t that the acts are voor. Most of them are the best that can be hooked. One answer might be in the way they are presented—thrown on the stage without any particular rhyme or reason. The comics on the bill this week-end tie. up the whole business in a neat package. The band on the stage sets some pace to the show. You get the feeling that this is a show, not simply a series of stunts. It indicates how vaudeville might survive on N. Pennsylvania st. ” Publicity Gag THERE ARE the three Novak Sisters, a trio of girl acrobats who have some fast and muscular routines; Johnny Hyman who dissects ‘words on a blackboard which looks like he made it himself and Jackie Green, a good mimic who beats his brains out being nice to the audience. Last but not least is the Golden Pair, a gent and a lady acrobatic team which is smoother in more ways than one. Concerning their abilities, I received a telegram from Chicago advising how terrific this team is and signed “Associated Press.” However, I do not object to

receiving telegrams from the Golden Pair, since they have to make a living, too. Fact is, they are almost as good as they say they are on the twirls and whirls —but as press agents, strictly from hunger.
u "The Wind" THE RETURN of “Reap the Wild Wind” at the Circle shows how the movies have curtailed the super-duper stuff during the war. Cecil B. DeMille made it in the days when the limit of mate- - rials for set construction was the sky and DeMille climbed higher than anybody else. It played at the Indiana last year. Since then, the super epic has become a thing of the past, like, a new car. So it is something to see Ray Milland and John Wayne battling a giant squid under a technicolor sea, in as dandy a shipwreck as anybody has filmed since the days of Milton Sills. Adventure and romance pour out of the hold by the bucketful, with Paulette Goddard playing a kind of maritime Scarlett O’Hara. Nowadays, with materials slated for more important uses, we must be content with less pretentious entertainment. Even our favorite unwinder of mighty winds, waves, storms and assorted catastrophes, Mr. DeMille, has taken to selling soap. This is the last of his epics for the duration.
” on ” “NIGHT PLANE FROM CHUNGKING,” with Robert Preston and Ellen Drew, is the second feature.
