A 2. Day Battle Over Caucasus

MO8scow, June 4 (U. P.).~The Russians shot down 23 more German planes yesterday for a two- ( day toll of 60 in the all-out battle for control of the air over the northwest Caucasus while a see-saw land battle raged below, bi Soviets announced today. The latest bag over the Caucasus, coupled with disclosure that 162 rather than 1283 German planes were shot down in Wednesday's mass raids on Kursk on the southcentral front, boosted the number of enemy aircraft destroyed on all Sronis Wednesday and yesterday to 53 (A German communique broadcast by the Berlin radio said 21 Russian tanks were destroyed in the repulse of repeated Russian attacks near Velizh, half-way between Velikie Luki and Smolensk on the central front. The communique said 1257 Russian planes were destroyed over the eastern front during May, while German losses | totaled only 143) The Soviet high command gave ‘no details. of the land fighting in the Caucasus, merely reporting that the battle continued on the Kuban

The Russians have been intensifying pressure against the narrow German bridgehead there, opposite the Crimea. * (The German radio said the Red army was attacking the axis bridgehead with the “utmost stubbornness.” The fiercest fighting was reported. in the Moldavanskaya area.) ‘Supporting the ground and air forces, Soviet warships in the Black sea sank an enemy submarine and transport, the Russian Thursday midnight communique reported.

New French Committee of National Liberation

Takes Up Question.

ALGIERS, June 4 (U. P.).—The newly-organizéd French committee of national liberation today was to consider the controversial question of whether Gen. Henri Honore Giraud will be permitted to continue in command of the French army. Giraud - and Gen. Charles de Gaulle were named co-ghairman yesterday of the “Comite Francaise de la Liberation Nationale,” which will administer French territory outside enemy control until France itself is liberated. De Gaulle has contended that French tradition is against a ranking leader of the government holding a military command, but Giraud so far has refused to resign his post at the head of the army. The annual commencement dinner of the Bulter university school of religion will be held at 6:30 p. m. today at the University Park Christian church. More than 150 graduates, alumni and guests will hear a talk on “Faith's Pivots” by the Rev, Urban L. Ogden, supply minister of the Christian church at Wabash and graduate of the school. Toastmaster for the evening will be the president of the school’s alumni association, the Rev. R. Powell Mead of the East Lynn Christian church at Anderson. The recognition of the graduates and presentation of awards will be made by Dean Frederick D. Kershner. Stolen Freedom >] Lasts 24 Years

TWENTY-FOUR YEARS of ‘stolen freedom ended yesterday for James J. Taylor, alias Charles Aron: Proctor, who escaped from the Indiana state prison in 1919 while serving a life sentence for murder, Don Stiver superintendent of the state police announced today. Taylor was arrested recently in Los Angeles, Cal., and readily admitted his identity. He was sentenced from Pike county in 1914

for the alleged murder of his stepbrother. He had escaped from the prison pumping station where he was a trusty. Proctor is to be returned to prison, police said. Arrested on a charge of drunken driving, he was identified by the F. B. I. on the west coast. He had married in 1927 and was em= ployed in California as a construction engineer.
