MANY OF NEW YORK'S Chinese families see that the Japs get fat—but not healthfully so. Outstanding among those working hard to answer Uncle Sam’s call for used kitchen fats for conversion into glycerine for explosives are Dr. Arthur Liu, his 21 months, and Alan, nearly 6 years old. They gather up all the used kitchen fat they can and turn it in to their

butcher for forwarding to the processing plant. “We hope. it will help turn the Rising Sun into a Dying Sunset;” says Honolulu-born Dr. Liu, who practices in New York. Dr. Liu graduated with honors from the University of Hawaii and took his M. D.

Dietitians Get Officers’ Rank and Pay

Qualified civilian women dietitians may now join the army air forces with the relative rank of second lieutenant for duty assignments to air force stations. Educational requirements include a degree from a college of recognized; standing, the major being in food and nutrition or institutional management. Completion of a training

course for dietitians, as approved by the surgeon general of the army, is also specified.’ , Two years of experience in a hospital approved by the surgeon general may be substituted for the training course, provided this includes diet therapy, planning ade-

in food preparation and service, food cost control and ordering food supplies and equipment. One year of this experience must have been within the past 10 years.

Uniforms Provided

Initial appointments will be made in the grade of dietitian with a rating corresponding to that of second lieutenant, and promotions will be made in accordance with army regulations. Appointees will receive the pay of a second lieutenant plus quarters, - subsistence and uniforms. ‘An applicant must be a citizen of the United States or a co-belligerent nation and must not have passed her 45th birthday. Legislation giving relative rank to the dietitians became effective at the close of last year, and their Washington headquarters have been established: under the direction of Maj. Helen Burns in the office of the surgeon general of the army. The need for trained women at air fields is very great, declare the officials in the office of the air surgeon, army air forces, as a well-

tegral ‘part of the air operations for the army.

Study Food Effects

Interesting studies have been made from time to time to ascertain the effect of proper diets on the air performance of the fliers. These surveys have proved conclusively that a close connection exists between a suitable diet and the accurate target hitting or other flight objectives of the American airmen.

the quartermaster corps of the army is now held by a woman, according to figures compiled as of April 1. Departmental and field positions in this service branch have 30,602 of their 81,825 totals occupied by women. The peacetime ratio five years previously was approximately one to seven. Clerical .and similar office work still accounts for a majority of these positions, although the number engaged in work once regarded

: las purely masculine is constantly increasing. : :

Women’s employment is highest in the office of the quartermaster general, where most of the work is and clerical. More than 68 per cent of the employees in that office are women, an increase of 3 per cent since the first of this year. As the manpower shortage grows, they are taking jobs as day laborers, loading, unloading and storing supplies. Recently a few have been hired for interior guard duty. The quartermaster corps announces that women are equally efficient in these new posts and are more accurate and conscientious about following orders.

I am the only fellow she goes with. She has other chances but always refuses. loves me and doesn’t know it. Do you think love will grow on a person? I am 20 years old and would like to leave someone behind me when I go. P.H #” » » Answer—I don’t think you should be satisfied with such a luke-warm attitude on the girl’s part but should look for someone more interested in you. When you find such a girl you'll wonder what made you want

to overpersuade an uncertain young

lady.

If she is a good friend and you;

like her, let it go at that but don’t cut yourself off from other girls because of her. Your search for the one and only is not ended. Of course it is nice to know that the girl you left behind you is in love with you, but don’t let this wish make you satisfied with ‘half a loaf. You're still very young and have time to find a girl who spontaneously puts you first.
