‘Lady of Burlesque" . ONE OF THE THINGS fhat

can be said for Hunt Stromberg’s

. newest venture in the producing field, “Lady of Burlesque, ” is that it’s

different. It is based on the lusty

and sometimes rowdy work of art

by the artiste, Gypsy Rose Lee, who knows all about Suspense from

her long experience on the stage. Barbara Stanwyck carries the and herself capably enough and sneers only once. Facial expressions in this picture, however, are probably the least of its attractions. Michael O’Shea, the newcomer,

does what he has to do with enthusiasm. He is funnier in person than he is in this film. He was in town last week on a goodwill tour of movie booking agencies. There are only two murders in the story which is contrived with a. frowsy kind of cunning. Somehow, one expects more, like a touch of mass murder, but Gypsy Rose knows when to stop. ‘Director Wellman does manage to inject some of the unwashed atmosphere of the burlesque-pal-ace into the show, with a strong dash of "Phantom-of-the-Opera” mystery. The romantic interest builds up backwards between Stanwyck and

O’Shea, the comedian. Murder is suggested everywhere you look. However, we are not here to give the plot away. If you want to see how it all comes out in the wash and aren’t any smarter than we are, you'll have to sit through ‘reproductions of burlesque scenes which are agonizingly typical, plus some other scenes that aren’t so typical, just agonizing. ” ” ” LOEW'S second feature is “The Devil With Hitler,” with Alan Mowbray, a light fantasy.

How .this same test was successfully met a half dozen times by the same giant portable refrigerator in a day’s testing at a naval base was described to the meeting “of the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers here yesterday by Mark Mooney of the Carrier Corporation, Syracuse, N. The demountable walk-in cooler was the answer co-operatively devised by refrigerating engineers of many manufacturers. Designed for use under battle conditions, these coolers have interchangeable parts. If a strafing plane knocks out the condenser unit

In the early days of the war, Mr. Mooney revealed, the importance of spare parts and tools to repair disabled refrigerators was overlooked, with resulting supply problems. Now spare parts must be rustproofed. and individually packed to withstand rust and corrosion for at least three years in. any climate.

board into shallow water along with other cargo, to be fished out by the armed forces when it is convenient and safe to do so.

Orders.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 4.—Two actions potentially important to hundreds of thousands of men and women working in west coast ship- |: yards and others throughout the country emerged from a three-day conference of the Pacific coast district metal trades council here. Charging that War Manpower Commissioner McNutt’s labor freezing order is “shackling labor,” the A. F. of L. district council, representing 435,000 employes in the Pacific seaboard’s shipbuilding industry, authorized a test in the federal courts of the legality of the directive. Mr. McNutt and the war manpower commission were accused by Edward Rowen of San Francisco and other delegates of “whittling away labor's rights” under the guise of wartime necessity. The conference also demanded a meeting of the national shipbuilding stabilization committee to reopen the Pacific coast master wage agree-

/ment in order to achieve a pay in-

crease. This committee was “urgently requested” to call a meeting, preferably in San Francisco, before June 6. Should the committee comply, the way would be opened for similar meetings in the three other

unions acceded to President Roose-|~

velt’s request and accepted an eight-cents-an-hour pay increase instead of the 13 cents sought. At that time the government promised that the committee would consider this year a readjustment of ray schedules if living costs continued to rise, according to Al Wynn, secretary of the Bay cities metal trades council here, This promise, Mr. Wynn, said has not been kept. Another sore. spot was the stabilization committee’s action in calling a referendum of the unions’ membership on technical amendments

to the master wage agreement. :
