The Brookings institution reported yesterday that, although total weekly earnings in Great Britain have increased 60 per cent and actual
living costs have risen 40 per cent, the cost-of-living index has been kept stable for nearly two years. This, Brookings reported, was due
tail price increases, heavy taxation and sale of securities to non-bank-ing sources. “Many wage agreements provide for adjustments in rates to compensate for changes in the cost of living,” Brookings reported. “Actual weekly wage rates in July, 1942, had increased only 31 per cent over the 1938 levels and, although total week-
earnings had risen about 60 per :
cent, nearly half of this was due to overtime, shifts to better-paying Jobs, fuller employment and incentive payments.”
Pays Subsidies
In December, 1939, the governt paid subsidies to prevent retail price increases of some basic food products but by April, 1941, the cost-of-living index had jumped 28 per cent. After adoption of a much more comprehensive subsidy program, the index was stabilized, the Brookings report said. Wartime price control in Britain has been administered along commodity lines, Brookings said, with the same agency responsible for price control, rationing, import and export | movements, subsidies and other features. “This type of administrative organization has contributed to the effectiveness of controls,” the report said,

Representatives From 20 Chapters to Meet Here Saturday.
Twenty chapters of the Gamma Nu sorority will be represented here tomorrow and Sunday when the sorority holds its eighth annual convention in the Claypool hotel.
Gamma Nu is the honorary degree conferred upon young women who are members of the Woman's Benefit association. Miss Frances D. Partridge, supreme secretary of the association, will be guest of honor. Mrs. Grace Meredith, state field director and member of the supreme board of trustees, also will be a guest. Registration will be at 10 a. m. Saturday. A buffet supper and dance will be held in the Claypool Saturday night. On Sunday state officers ‘will be elected and an informal reception for the guests will be held. Following this, lunch will be held in the chateau room of the Claypool, and Miss Partridge will address the group. Members of the convention committee are Mrs, Jeanne Weesnerm, chairman; Mrs. Irene Span, president of Mu chapter, and Miss Margaret Spray, president of Tau chapter. All are from Indianapolis.
DIONNES WON'T SEE DR. DAFOE FUNERAL
CALLANDER, Ont, June 4 (U. P.).—The Dionne quintuplets, who brought world-wide fame to Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, will not attend his funeral tomorrow at Toronto, it was learned yesterday. The little country doctor who brought the quints- safely through the perilous early days will be puried in Park Lawn cemetery after services at the Rosedale United church.
