DEPUTY KILLED AS RIOT GUN EXPLODES

| LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. June 3 (U. P.).—Robert Grubbs, 43, Dearborn county deputy sheriff, accidentally shot and killed himself with a riot gun during a manhunt, yes terday. Grubbs was a member of a posse searching Dearborn county farm lands for William Ray Seiler, 33, farmer, who was wanted in connection with the shooting of Russell Scarber of Cincinnati. Authorities said that Seiler shot Scarber during an argument. Scarper was reported in serious condition in a hospital at Cincinnati. Grubbs’ riot gun discharged accidentally, sending a stream of bullets through the upper part of his body.

PHYSICIAN'S WIFE DROWNS SONS, SELF

| CHICAGO, June 3 (U. P.).—Police sought today to clarify the motives of Mrs. Libby C, Corren, 34, physician's wife, who rented a rowboat yesterday, rowed out jnto

‘lake Michigan and drowned her |

two small sons and herself. | Officers were puzzled by a suicide rote in which Mrs. Corren ascribed her act to the illness of the children, Jay, 4, and Allen, 2. “It is impossible for me to go on any longer, ” the note said. | Dr. Herman Corren, 34, who collapsed when told of his wife’s act, denied that the children were ill He said he and his wife had no marital troubles and that she had given no indication that she con- - templated suicide. —

spy. He started out to be an if surance agent (either you post $11,000 or lose your right to drive). Then he was a corporal in a tank and worked up to spy so as not to get captured. " Wandering around in the desert, after the exhaust fumes in’ his tank kill everybody, he stumbles into Tamiroff’s hotel at Sidi el Hootchiekootchie, or whatever. Rommel rolls in with his gang and our hero is in as fine g trap as Paramount ever set for anybody. “I was only an insurance agent,” our Franchot mumbles, “Now ,..” ” ” So it’s do or die and he’s a spy. Rommel confides that back in 1937 he pretended to be Prof. Rommel. While ostensibly digging for mummies in Egypt, he buried tons of munitions and gasoline under the sand. The five caches are the five graves to Cairo, see? Rommel has already dug up two of the caches and is well on his ‘way, but: little does he suspect that Tone and Paramount are on to his tricks and are ready to cache him. Tone gets away, tips off the British army and the rest is more familiar history. Now, kiddies, if you will eat up your lentils and have the' price of admission ready, Uncle Wiggily will tell you next week how, he intends to win the war.

BOMBING ACCURACY OF YANKS PRAISED

LONDON, June 3 (U. P.).—The R.A.F. commentator yesterday praised the stepped-up American air offensive in the European theater, but called for more bombers immediately to press the offensive against Germany. “These American daylight attacks have tremendous value and effect,” he said. “They play a very important part. All I can say is that we want more American aircraft— and quickly.” He said that accuracy of American daylight bombing “brings a light heart to any bombing expert” and that results had been “remarkable.”

"PUTS POISON IN FAMILY'S SOUP

German-Born Citizen Unnerved by Bombings,

Coroner Says.

CLEVELAND, J 3 (U. P)—A German-born clo ng worker who died of poiso after eating dehydrated soup tried to destroy his entire family because he was worried over the fate of relatives living in bombed areas of Germany, Coroner Samuel R. Gerber said today. CGierber said that William F. Santelmann had mixed a heavy quantity of arsenic in the soup which he and other members of his family ate for dinner last Thursday night. Santelmann and a 17-year-old son, William Jr, died later in a hospital. . His wife, Mrs. Antonio Santelmann, and their 13-year-old daughter,. Agate, were made serjously ill after eating the soup but probably will recover. Two other sons escaped by not being at the dinner table. Gerber said that Santelmann, a

pected subversive activities, However, the FBI field office here would not comment on the coroner's statement. The coroner's verdict of murder and suicide ascribed Santelmann’s action to “mental unbalance brought on by worry over relatives and friends suffering in the bombing of German cities in the Ruhr.” Santelmann was a native of a village near Dusseldorf, where his wife was born. Mrs. Santelmann later said the verdict was a “horrifying shock” to her because Santelmann “was a perfect father and a wonderful husband.”
