~The Chamber of Commerce recOgnizes that the additional workers needed must come from right # hee in the city or nearby. The . WMC has estimated that in the next five months our plants will need 25,000 more workers to ‘add to ‘their force and to replace those drafted. . Our normal reservoir lis sed and it is believed that 15,000 who live ‘out of town are working here “also. Obviously, then, women are going to have to do the work.
- At the first of this year a survey : showed that 32,700 of the 1105,000 workers here were women, | many . Who never worked before. It is believed that from. 60 per i to

RYE CLIMBS TO
Rise Influenced by Belief That Loan Price Will Be Increased.
‘futures climbed to new six-year highs on the Board of Trade today influenced by a belief that an increase in the rye loan price will be announced. early next week. Other grains scored major gains. Ld Rye finished the day up 2% to
3, oats up % to 1% and corn unchanged. Trade circles looked for a 7s cent a bushel loan rate on rye, or a 15 cent increase over last year. This factor turned the market bullish and prices ‘rose more than 2 cents a bushel, gains amounting to 27 cents since last November.

and The Chicago Daily News, Inc. LONDON, May 29.—In a document covering every aspect of postwar affairs and setting out the socialist view of principles which should govern the direction of British affairs, the Labor party yeSter-] day published its declaration of
gan, the London Daily Herald, as a ment,” this latest socialist program
port from the national executive committee of the party to the impending annual party conference (June 14-18).
Seen As Moderate
Despite the Herald's introduction, the new program appears notably | more moderate than its predecessors. Here are the main proposals for! the home front: 1. Maintenance of an adequate
sources. | id 2. The Beveridge social security scheme should be prepared for op-

include comprehensive health and hospitalization aspects with special aid for mothers. In this connection, the party drops its earlier demand for immediate adoption of the plan in toto and admits that it requires © further examination and amendment.

: BAKERY LABELING
ORDER WITHDRAWN
A provision that bakers must print the words “ceiling price” as
«| well as the actual price figures on
wrappers on cake, pie, doughnuts and sweet yeast raised products
» | yesterday was withdrawn by the B OPA before it actually had been | put i
effect. The revocation is effective, June 2. A major factor in revocation of the “ceiling price” printing provision was the fact that new plates for labeling require a .substantial amount of vital metal. The labels |N on the wrappers customarily carry
3 the price itself.
While the regulation originally
+icalled for the change in the label-
ing of the wrappers, it had not gone into effect because bakers were per® mitted to use up stocks of wrappers which they had on hand. Where bakers have had the new plates made, they may use them if
they desire to do so. 3a
ELECTS OFFICERS
A resolution condemning national rent regulations and urging powers for local rent directors to correct “injustices” was adopted by the Savings & Loan League of Indiana at its annual meting yesterday at the Severin hotel. : George E. Hayes, Marion, was elected president ‘of the association to succeed E. W. Springér of Indianapolis. Other officers named
| were Arthur W. Allen, Washing-
ton, first vice president; Thomas S. Gozdecki, East Chicago, second vice president, and Ivan E. Cooprider, Indianapolis, secretary and treasurer.
HOOSIERS NAMED TO * GLASS COMMITTEE
Two Indiana men were appointed today as members of a national industry advisory committee to rep-
according to an announcement of the OPA. They dare James M. Foster of the Foster-Forbes Glass Co., Marion, and Fred J. Petty, Ball Brothers Co., Muncie. The committee of 16 industry representatives will co-operate with OPA’ in study of the industry's
pricing problems. a
