The Heidt show is about the same. Frankie Carle at the piano and Fred Lowery are most of the show, as usual. The band shows the same lack of spontaneity it did last year, although it does so with some new personnel, and the arrangements, if not the tunes, are mostly concerned yh noise and rhythm. Mr. Carle is back, hi with one foot on the keyboard and his hands behind his back. Never a sour note as he tickles the ivories quickly. - Mr. . Three of the boys in the band pull the old Andrews Sister gag, dolling up like the famous trio and going through the contortions to a recording played backstage. SMALL HOMES GET

FUEL OIL INCREASE

Small-home owners will be given n increase in next winter's fuel oil tioning with a minimum of ‘“red ype” involved, Indianapolis OPA officials announced today. Local rationing boards will mail a simple form to householders in early

June, they explained. Householders

and other renewal applicants will be asked to return these blanks as soon as possible in order to facilitate allotments of quotas in time to permit an early fill-up of fuel tanks this summer. The OPA said the adjustment was ,| “provided to correct excessive cuts r certain consumers, notably those pating modest-size houses.

HINT NEW GAINS IN SOVIET PUSH

But Berlin Claims Fury of Russ #n Caucasus Drive Abates.

LONDON, May 29 (U. P:).—The German radio hinted today that the Russian army had blasted out new gains in its Caucasian offensive, but said that the fury of the Soviet attack. had abated temporarily following the destruction of 128 Russian planes and 120 tanks in two days. : The Russians reported the destruction of 66 more German

in intensified air battles over the Caucasus. There still was no word from the Russians on the Nazi reported offensive, although the Soviet Friday midnight communique again reported “battles” in the Kuban area northeast of Novorossisk without elaboration. However, the Soviets normally withhold announcement of an offensive until it has gained at least its initial objectives.

“bisgult, | ] Attacked in Waves y ssian mid-day communi-

The German radio, in summarizing Thursday's operations, said that an estimated 150,000 Russian troops attacked the German bridgehead above Novorossisk in waves without making any “important” breaches in the axis defenses.-

By DAN GORDON Rudy Vallee, who sprang to national fame quite some time ago

with that “Stein Song,” has been

moviegoing audiences in deadpan roles. And it seems as though -he

is beginning to be typed not only

but also as a dull and pedantic screen millionaire. ‘That's the kind of a role he has in “Happy Go Lucky,” the Par-

amount musical with Mary Martin, Dick Powell,. Betty Hutton and - Eddie Bracken. The radio master of ceremonies and band leader dees a bretty good job on the whole. .He plays the perfect foil for Mary's grasping female, bent on hooking a millionaire at all costs. One of the best features of the film is the singing of madcap Betty Hutton. Her rendition of “Murder " Says” is truly classic. She is the jive artist superb. Of course, Mary Martin, in her own warbling province, need yield to no one in putting a s song across. She Budy Yalice swings out with a new. version of “Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay” and polishes off her performance with two other neat numbers, “Let's Get, Lost” and “Happy Go.Lucky,” the last in a duet with Dick Pow-

ell. As you can well see from the

above description of the picture “Hapy Go Lucky” is an out and out musical comedy with hardly a pretense at having a serious plot. After all, you can’t have everything. o 8 »
