8 ‘People Need Movies of the 1 Escape Type’
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Times Special Writer WILL HAYS SAYS our movies have a twofold purpose these days —to win the war, and at the same time to give entertainment and relaxation to people suffering from worry and strain. }
For the sake of some of those > millions I wish Hollywood could S 5 B® V i { = = L A G S . make up its mind. :
: Present films leave us wondering . when its purpose is to win and : when to entertaip. : For 50 cents you can step into any moving-picture J house and come out with a nervous br . . hi a Beautifully colored service flags, ‘be one of those gay comedies de- % with gold color cord, tassels and signed to, take your mind off your CE ARMY fringe. leave more apprehensive than before. : ” ” 8 SUCH INCIDENTS are commonplace. And worst of all is the thought: What degeneration of mind permits us to enjoy war as entertainment? The idea is repugnant. Furthermore some of our war propaganda films, government-pro-duced, are so trite and tiresome one begrudges the money spent at the box office. There's a dash of insult to any audience in such tripe. Nervous, tired, unhappy people dole out their dimes and quarters at the movie houses because they yearn for escape from reality. Perhaps Hollywood would do more to win the war by giving them only escape entertainment. At least the two types of pictures should be segregated, so that those who delight in vicarious bloodshed could indulge their passion while “p~ the rest of us who want relaxation © would be-sure of getting it.
