The Coming Trend Toward Revivals
A BOOM for the reissue and revival of old pictures is forecast today by the movie trade organ, “Film Daily.” This is a result of general curtailment in the manufacture of new products. It also will serve to keep alive the interest of movie fans in stars now in the service. A good many of the old-timers would provide a weltome change

from the stuff the studios are
putting out nowadays. It has be- |
come apparent that the quality of the average movie now being turned out has deteriorated. This might be blamed on the departure of many actors and technicians for the armed services and limitation on the amount of new materials for sets which up to recently has limited the cost of new sets to $5000 per picture. It also might be laid to the door of the film-a-week school which figures that the public is in the mood to buy anything. Let's go back a few years. . . .
2 8 = REMEMBER ‘“Cavaicade,” with Clive Brook and Diana Wynyard?
“Forever and a Day,” which played here at the Circle recently, was a pale imitation of it. “Cavalcade” was not only the best film of 1933, but one of the finest of its type ever shown on the screen. Remember the first “Thin Man” film, with William Powell and Myrna Loy? That was in 1934. “The Barrets of Wimpole Street,” with Fredric March, Norma Shearer and Charles Laughton, led the list in that year. It also was the year that produced such greats as “It Happened One Night,” with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, and “The House of Rothschild,” with George Arliss. In 1935, John Ford, who is producing battle film for the navy now, brought out the “Informer,” the greatest job of acting Victor McLaglen ever turned in, they said. The following year, 1936, came “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Charles Laughton as Capt. Bligh. Also “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” with Gary Cooper; “The Story of Louis Pasteur,” with Mr. Paul Muni (remember) and “Anthony Adverse.” ” ” » IN 1937, there was Mr, Paul Muni again in the “Life of Emile Zola”; Pearl Buck's “The Good Earth” and “Lost Horizon” with Ronald Colman, the first of the James Hilton novels to hit the screen. Then there were pictures like “The Citadel,” with Robert Donat and Rosalind Russell; “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “You Can't Take It With You” in 1938. “Stanley and Livingstone,” “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” and “The Wizard of Oz” came out in 1939. In 1941, Steinbeck hit the public with his “Grapes of Wrath.” Charlie Chaplin released “The Great Dictator,” one of the sharpest satires ever drawn in movieland. This followed notchka” and sage” in 1940. “Gone With the Wind” blew in at so-called popular prices in 1941. Last year, “Mrs. Mininer,” “How Green Was My Valley,”
“Rebecca,” “Ni“Northwest Pas-

moviegoer would be getting a better deal if he had the opportunity to catch one of .the greats of yesteryear he probably missed, instead of being confronted by the quick-trip trash the studios are dishing out now. We may expect to see a good many revivals downtown this summer. The summer season usually is slack. The main cinema event will be the release of “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” which was two years in the making. Meantime, the Circle theater has booked a repeat of “Reap the Wild Wind” for June 4. Cecil B. DeMille epic was released in March, 1942. It played at the Indiana last summer. This is only the beginning of a movie policy that won't be hard to take at all, in view of the sad state of much of the current product.
Anyway, Prexy's Had the Measles
HILLSDALE, Mich, May 25 (U. P.).—Measles didn’t stop Mary McGiffin, Hillsdale college senior, from receiving her diploma. Stricken on the eve of graduation exercises, the Cleveland coed was confined to the Chi Omega sorority house and figured she was just “out of luck.” But shortly after conclusion of commencement, President Harvey L. Turner and Registrar Florence Kreiter appeared at the house and presented the diploma with official ritual. “It’s the chance we take,” said Turner. “Anyway, I've already had measles.”

in September, 1940. Friedland was the first witness in the divorce suit brought by Lt. Cmdr. William H. (Jack) Dempsey of the coast guard, former heavyweight champion, against his wife, who has filed a counter-suit. Dempsey has named Jenkins and Benny Woodall, a fight promoter of Dallas, Tex. ‘as co-respondent in his divorce action against the former actress. Friedland testified Mrs. Dempsey visited Jenkins when the lightweight fighter was in training at Pompton Lakes, N. J, and that later he saw Jenkins, Woodall and Mrs. Dempsey at the opening of a restaurant near Coney Island.

It was while Friedland was driving Jenkins and Mrs. Dempsey from a Philadelphia hotel to the arena where Jenkins was to meet Bob Montgomery, that the couple be-
“They looked at one another like they liked each other,” Friedland said. “Did they caress each other?” Dempsey's attorney, Arthur Driscoll, asked. Objections of Defense Attorney Gerald Donovan were sustained. “What did you see them do?” persisted Driscoll. “She hugged and kissed him,” Friedland said.
