Woman's Viewpornt— Delinquency Is An Enemy on Home Front
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Times Special Writer PUBLICITY GIVEN juvenile delinquency in a recent Readers Digest has brought protests from Chambers of Commerce and other officials. Several cities, mentioned as topping national production of venereal disease and prostitution, ii wo SAY they are no A worse than other A places, which may | k be true. RE But this is be-! \ side the point. | N These evils exist! Sin our nation and La r e increasing. Those are the main facts before us. \ n other words we face an enemy on the home front as deadly as Hitler. Our propagandists in Washington. our overzealous recruiters of war-plant workers and our own shortsightedness have encouraged | the migration of mothers from] homes to factories without thought | for the consequences. ® = = And the consequences are terrible. False emphasis was put upon a girls “duty to the men: in uni-| form.” The lure of easy money gripped us, and so it seems the strestwalking profession has had about aS many recruits as the induction centers. Thousands of small children whose mothers are proudly saving democ- | racy in offices or factories will be lost and ruined by their neglect. The divorce rate is appalling every- | where. That phrase “winning the war”; has several meanings. Military victories can't do the whole job. | Certainly our boys will have died) in vain and liberty will be lost to} the U. S. A if moral degeneracy is allowed to conquer us here. There's not much sense in fight- | ing for freedom if. in the process, we give up all these solid virtues which distinguish free men everywhere. and without which no man, can have liberty. What price victory if its fruits be vice, disease and crime?
Tips on Storing Winter Things Storing your family's winter things: would simply be a matter of “put-| ting them away” if it werent for) moths. The first precaution to fol-| low is to have all garments dry cleaned, since this will kill all forms, of moth life beside removing spots and soil which attract the beasts! The seocnd step is to ask your | cleaner to store your things for the summer. Professional storage is in-| expensive, Remember, many wuo!! articles cannot be replaced and a single dinner for sven a medivm-| sized moth is apt to be very costly. |

VITAMIN A
Vitamin A is present in Nature in two forms, One form found in butter fat, fish liver oils and the liver of animals, is the vitamin itself. It is made by the animals from the other form which is found in vegetables and fruits. This form is called caotene because carrots are the vegetable which contains the greatest amount of it. It is present in all fruits and vegetables which have a bright yellow or green color. This is why we say that a colorful diet is a healthful diet.
Human beings, like animals, store Vitamin A in the liver and when the diet does not supply enough, these stores are used up. When that happens the deficiency disease begins to appear. The first symptom is night blindness. This means that the eves cannot change easily from bright to dim lights, and as it gets worse, the eyes cannot see well in dim light at all Later a disease of the eyes may appear, which is a permanent injury to the eyes, and if not checked, results in blindness. It is called xerophthalmia.
Lack of Vitamin A also affects the health of the linings of the nose. mouth and passages used for breathing. It lowers the re~ic'~v=e to infections, especially of the respiratory type, as colds, influenza etc. It also afrects the surfaces of all internal organs. It may cause muscular weakness, poor growth and hinder tooth and bone development.
Vitamin A is very important to the new born baby and to the woman who is pregnant or nursing a child. Daily requirements of Vitamin A are measured in International Units, This is equal to 0.0008 milligrams of pure caotene. The best way to measure the daily needs is to compare the amount in common foods with the daily requirements, as follows: Children between the ages of 2 and 14 years require the amount of Vitamin A contained in:
1 serving green or veilow vegetable
egy 1 quart of whole milk Adult needs can be supplied by: 1 pink milk 1 egg 2 pats of butter 1 serving green or yellow vegetable
Common foods which may be substituted are shown in the following table*:
International Foods Units cup milk . cube cheese, 1% mches. . oz. liver “i cesantidd tablespoon butter cup cooked greens cup stewed apricots ....... medium stewed prunes ... cup cooked carrots cooked sweet petato banana .... medium tomato, NW i... tablespoon cod liver oil. .
Vitamin A is net dissolved by “a, but by oil. It is not destroyed by boiling or exposure to air, but is affected by cooking in fat or oil

VITAMIN D
This vitamin is associated with Vitamin A because both are carried in fats, especially fish liver oils Vitamin D differs from other vitamins because it can be provided by sunshine. The skin contains a substance which the ultra violet rays from the sun tor sun lamp) change into the vitamin. The effect of these rays is hindered by clothing, window glass or dirty, smoky or foggy air. They are most efficient during the summer and in the middle of the day when the sun is most directly overhead. eH uch exposure to the sun's rays may harm n
Vitamin D is necessary to everyone, but especially to growing children and pregnant or nursing women. It enables the body to make use of calcium and phosphorus to build and maintain good bones and teeth. The body rannot use these minerals properly without Vitamin D, nor can it build bones and teeth with Vitamin D unless it has sufficient calcium and phosphorus.
The disease caused by a lack of either the vitamin or minerals is called rickets, and may result in deformed bones teeth or other structural defects.
Vitamin D is found in few natural foods. Fish liver cils are the richest sources. Fat fish, beef, lamb or pork liver, eggs, butter and cream furnish small amounts.
Milk, fresh and evaporated and a few cereal products are being enriched with Vitamin D, either by irradiation through exposure to ultraviolet rays or by addition of Vitamin D obtained from fish liver oils.
The growing child and the pregnant and nursing woman should have a daily minimum of one or two teaspconfuls of cod liver oil or its equivalent. Other adults can gain added protection to health by taking two or three teaspoonfuls of fish liver oils a week.
VITAMIN C
Ascorbic acid gets its name from the fact that it was first discovered as a cure for a terrible disease common to sailors on long voyages where they could not get fresh fruits and vegetables Long before Vitamin C was discovered, it was found that British sailors kept free from scurvy by the addition of lime juice to their rations. Thus they came to be called “Limeys.”
Scurvy is now seldom seen in this country. But many people suffer from unrecognized deficiency of Vitamin C. “Spring fever” restlessness, irritability in children and a general run down feeling may be due to a lack of this vitamin. If it continues, the teeth and bones may be damaged and the blood system weakened so that it cannot fight infections.
Ascorbic acid is used in the body in forming healthy tissue around certain cells. as the marrow in the bones, the dentine that makes up the greater part of the teeth, the walls of the capillaries or tiny blood vessels and other connective tissues. If it is lacking. there may be soreness of the joints, sore, bleeding gums, weakness and a tendency to bruise easily. Serious deficiency may result in scurvy.
Citrus fruits are the best source of Vitumin A. An eight ounce glass of orange juice will furnish 100 milligrams, or more than the daily requirements for an adult. The United States Children’s Bureau recommends giving strained orange juice. tomato juice or other source of Vitamin C before and end of the first month, beginning with a teaspoonful a day, and gradually increasing until two tablespoonsful are given twice a day from the third month on. If tomato juice is given, twice as much is needed.
Daily needs in ascorbic acid are shown by the following table*: Ascorbic acid is measured in milligrams. The head of a common pin weighs one milligram.
Person Milligrams Man, moderately active Woman Moderately active .......... In pregnancy ....... Nessens In lactation ......... aveties Children Under one vear
Girls, 13-20 years ......e0enn Boys, 13-15 years .. Boys, 16-20 years
These requirements may be supplied by the amount of ascorbic acid in common foods as shown by the following table*:
Food
grapefruit cup tomatoes cup lemon juice cup canned vineapple juice .. large strawberries ... canteloupe .. .. cup sliced fresh pinéappie medium baked potato. .

Properly canned fruits and vegetables rejin most of the ascorbic acid, and orange juice for breakfast may be prepared the night before and kept covered in the refrigerator. Ascorbic acid is destroyed by long cooking or by the use of soda in the cooking water. It dissolves in water, EE i a at It is destroyed by long exposure to the air. Fruits and vegetables for salads should be cut up just before they are to be served, and should never stand in water.
