'For Whom the Bell Tolls' Retains 'That' Scene

By MARTIN KANE United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, May 20.—Those who have been worrying about the sleeping bag scene in “For Whom the Bell Tolls” can relax—it's in, and, what's more, Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper are in it together. Akim Tamiroff, who plays Pablo in the Ernest Hemingway opus, swore on a stack of wheatcakes today that no profane directorial hands have been laid on the sleeping -bag. “It is anti-Fascist,” he said. : “There can be no mistake about x = ! > = = | that. VOICE from the Balcony by RICHARD LEWIS

‘Crash Dive'

TECHNICOLOR PHOTOGRAPHY appears to be the redeeming feature of 20th Century-Fox's “Crash Dive,” which wins the war, at the Indiana this week. Here we find Tyrone Power up to his old cinema tricks of getting the other guy's girl (Anne Baxter) whom he meets in

a Pullman car.

We also find him sinking an enemy sub from his PT boat,

torpedoing enemy supply ships in his nifty submarine and leading a daring commando raid to destroy an enemy supply base near the north pole. After which, he marries Annie. All this for the price of a single admission plus the spectacle of the submarine’s flag ‘waving brightly under water while the sub rests on the bottom with enemy ashcans exploding all about. How Fox cameramen rigged this phenomenon is a mystery to me, but it is one of the unusual features of the film. Anbther interesting sidelight is the scene on the balcony of the Washington embassy where our Tyrone is talking confidential with Annie. The embassy ball is going on inside. “Who,” asks Annie,” “was that nice, cute little man with the glasses you introduced me to?” “Oh,” says Tyrone, “that was Mr. Litvinoff.” “The Russian ambassador? That cute man?” gasps Annie. “Just wait until I tell the girls back home!” » » J I was in favor all along of Dana Andrews, who plays the skipper of the sub, getting the girl and much annoyed at Tyrone muscling in on the grounds that a good actor ought to have his reward. But I guess Fox gave the girl to Tyrone on account of this is his last picture for the duration and also because he has a mansion in the film and a nice, old grandmother (Dame May Whitty). Anyway, there is a moral. Tyrone thinks the PT boats are the best service in the navy. He's unhappy when they put him on the submarine. Too slow. In the end, though, he has learned his lesson. He announces tolerantly that all branches of navy services are good. I bet the navy is death he approves.
