RECORDINGS By Richard Lewis
THE MOST AMBITIOUS recording to date of the Indianapolis symphony orchestra is the RCA-Victor feature release for May, Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem, “Manfred.” This work is the musical interpretation of Lord Byron's dramatic poem which expresses one of mightiest frustrations in English literature. Manfred is a tortured soul, unable to forget his sorrow and remorse over his lost love, Astarte. He wanders through the Alps seeking death, but is unable to die and unable to forget his woe. The first movement opens with this somber motif which is played by bass clarinet and bassoons. A bleak sigh of despair from the woodwinds and horns echoes the initial misery. | Mr. SevitzZky and the orchestra | KEITH'S work up a mighty despair. Conn.) said last night that air transportation “has been throttled” by railway policy to avoid competition and by administrative policy of suppressing new airlines. . In a debate on the American forum of the air, Mrs. Luce and William B. Ziff, author, upheld the premise, “The Airplane Will Play an Increasingly Important Role in Post-War Transportation.” U. S. Maritime Commission Chairman Emory S. Land and J. Carter Fort, general counsel of the Association of American Railroads, took the negative side. Mr. Land said that prophecies that aircraft eventually would supplant railroads and merchant shipping “have no sound premise or logical conclusion.” PITTSBURGH, May 17 (U. P).— Less food on the tables of public eating places has resulted in fewer stains on the tablecloths, according to a report of the Greater Pittsburgh Linen Supply association. The linen suppliers note a decrease cf 20 to 30 per cent in the number of fruit and vegetable juice spots on table linen since the advent of rationing.
