EXTEND DRAFT "FURLOUGH TIME

Change Seen as Preparation for Induction of

Fathers.

WASHINGTON, May 14 (U. P). —Further- preparation for the drafting of fathers in August was evidenced today in a war department order extending the furlough period between induction date and reception from seven to 14 days by July 1 and to 21 days by Sept. 1. The extension, it was pointed out, recognized that fathers need longer to adjust their affairs than single men. At the same time, however, selective service officials rejected a proposal by Senator Burton K. Wheeler (D. Mont.) that all draft registrants be given pre-draft physicals which would designate them finally as either fit or unfit for the draft. They said the suggestion wasn’t feasible, primarily because there are not enough physicians vo make the examinations and secondarily because the physical condition of a

Not later than July 1, all nine service commands must extend the post-induction furlough period from seven to 14 days. After July 1, but before Sept. 1, the period must increase from 14 to 21 days. “In some sections of the country the extension to 14 days will become effective immediately,” the war de-
