WASHINGTON, May 14 (U. P). —President Roosevelt said today he assumed a large number of the German and Italian prisoners cap tured in Tunisia—estimated in press dispatches at about 175,000—would be brought to this country. Other parts of the world, too, will fit into the picture of the disposition to be made of the North African captives, Mr, Roosevelt told his press conference. He said this was one of the questions which had come up in his conferences with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The problem is largely one of logistics, he added, and transportation and destinations must be determined before any definite consideration can be given to what use eventually will be made of the prisoners. Reports from Tunisia, as well as information available here, have indicated that many of the prisoners will be put to farm work in this

The prisoners, however, must agree voluntarily to do the farm work and must be paid. Told that there appeared to be some distinction drawn between plans for Italian and for German prisoners, Mr. Roosevelt said he did not believe there was anything to this report. The president was questioned about a dispatch from London saying there had been a definite agreement among the allies that when they reconquer a nation, the allied leaders will deal only with conquered military leaders and not with politicians of the reconquered countries. The president said as a generality this was untrue, because the situation probably would be different in
country and in Canada, in accord-

Norway and Norway is restored, he said by way of example, there is a perfectly good Norwegian government and a Norwegian king. When asked to apply a similar example to Italy, the president said he though it better not to talk about that at this time. Mr. Roosevelt was questioned about the situation in India particularly in the light of his recent talks with his special ambassador, William Phillips, but he declined any comment except to say that he supposed Phillips would return to his post.
