BRITAIN KEEPING FOOD COST DOWN

Nation Becomes Wholesaler And Guarantees Equal

LONBON. May 13.—Britain’s food industry, by fixing prices; paying, subsidies and itself becoming the

largest wholesaler in the country, has kept costs of food well below, wage levels and has guaranteed, equal supplies to everyone. The food ministry went into operation the day declared by issuing a standstill order on prices of major food items. Prices then were readjusted—and some WR lowered. The Second Miss Kirkpatrick order issued gave a list of specific prices for first-hand wholsesale gnd retail sales. Prices fixed were the maximum, with no ban on underselling. The ministry based all prices on cost plus fair remuneration for services and readjusts them from time to time in accordance with shipping, freights and primary costs. Retailers must display official price lists, which are re-issued monthly. Price controls are administered by 1500 local food control committees who use their own enforcement officers. to detect and investigate violations. The cost of living in Britain today

level, but food costs have been pegged at 20 per cent above prewar. The ministry of food’s policy is aimed, first, at preventing inflation; second, at stabilizing the cost of living, and third, at securing adequate supplies and equitable distribution. This has been efficiently accomplished by (1) control of prices, (2) application of subsidies to some items and (3) remission of taxation when control has been assured. Today controlled prices cover 90 per cent of all the average house-

living

wife's expenditure.

Your Health in War-Time Crowded Living Conditions Increase Disease Hazards

By DR, THOMAS D. MASTERS The United States army sets a high standard of immunization against disease. The average soldier is protected against typhoid, tetanus, typus, cholera, smallpox, diphtheria and yellow fever. Soldiers and others, particularly those who go to foreign lands, need this pro tection. No small credit for the exceptional good health of our army must be attributed to it. ° Wartime social conditions at ‘home are such that the bacilli

responsible for diphtheria and whooping cough, and the virus that causes smallpox, have extraordinary op- gas o portunities t o § attack. 3 There are | many people in | war industries in crowded condi- : tions and inadequate quarters, which are ideal for the spread of contagious diseases. The chief group of newcomers in all neighborhoods are the babies, who are a bumper crop this year, and most susceptible to this group of infections.

Use of Vaccines Urged

The field of public health, like every other, is being called upon to meet emergencies rapidly. The administrative agencies have im-

series of diphtheria toxoid injec- “ tiens should be repeated. Immunity, once established, lasts many years or even a lifetime. " The whooping cough vaccine is given in three doses a week apart. Again, protection develops after several months and usually lasts as long as this disease is a serious threat to the individual. Adults should have the smallpox vaccination repeated if they have not had a typical take with the resulting characteristic scar within the past five years. ' Those whose work causes them fo move about the country or who are living in congested defense areas where the sewage disposal and water supply systems as well as food distribution are being heavily overburdened should be protected against typhoid fever. The latter requires three injections at intervals of one week.

it’s time to change your oil!

1 EASY TO FORGET the importance of regular oil changes when rationing cuts your driving to

the bone!

But, even with reduced driving, your oil is constantly exposed to impurities, dust and other abrasives carried through the air—and, at the same time, to the harmful effect of partially burned fuel particles!

ALSO, with today’s short trips made at lower driving speeds, your engine does not get hot enough to “cook off’ the water which is formed by combustion and condensation. This water accumulates

in your crankcase and further contaminates your oil.

Don’t take needless chances. Let your Shell Dealer flush your crankcase and change your oil every time you change coupons! That's every two months —and the chances are you won't have to add a drop

between times.

When you are having your oil changed, it’s a good time to get a Shellubrication job—it’s the right amount of the right Shell Lubricants in the right places. And you get a written guarantee with every job!
