_ PREDICT CHANGE

IN TEACHING

New Method in Educating Children to Be Given Trial +

By Science Service NEW YORK, May 13.—A child's behavior, rather than his age in

_ years or his mental age, may in fu-

ture signal when it is time to start teaching him arithmetic, reading, writing or even more advanced subJects such as history, geography and foreign languages. This forecast of a possible revolution in educational methods appears in the conclusion of a new book, “The Neuromuscular Maturation of the Human Infant,” by Dr. Myrtle B. McGraw, New York child psychologist. How the child behaves and uses his muscles shows when he is ready, for example, to start learning to walk, Dr. McGraw reports from her study of infants. The very young infant when held upright on the floor will often make rapid stepping motions which may even carry him 8 few feet forward. But these steps do not appear related to the head or upper part of the body. Later, as his mind begins to be aware of different parts of his body and of position, he will not make these stepping motions but will hold his feet firmly to the floor as if glued there. Still later, when he is about ready to start walking, he may begin to move his feet deliberately, looking at them as he does so and deliberately holding his body erect. This indicates that he is getting the idea of using his feet, moving his legs and at the same time holding his body up as a means of locomotion.

Development Indicated

Similar signs in the baby’s behavior show when he is ready to leran other skills involving use of both muscles and mind. They indicate the development of his neryous system to the point where the learn other skills involving use of quiring awareness of sensation, control over muscles and knowledge of how to associate sensation with muscular control for a definite purpose, Until this point is reached for different parts of the nervous system control, it is useless to try to teach or train the baby. Once it is reached, the time has come when he can be taught most economically to perform 2 given act. Since this is true of early learning of body control and muscular function, it is probably also true, Dr. McGraw believes, of academic learning. So she suggests that educational psychologists should devote some effort to analyzing the ingredients or components of each subject, such as arithmetic or reading, and to learn the behavior signs of when a child is ready to learn that subject. Much else of interest to educators and to parents is contained in the book, although, since it is a report of scientific studies, it may prove too technical for the ordinary lay reader.

THE FIRST BIG event to be staged by the G. O. P. post-war policles council since its organization here a few weeks ago will be a luncheon on May 29 at which U. S. Senator Joseph Ball of Minnesota

will be the principal speaker.

Senator Ball is one of the authors of the much discussed Ball-Burton-Hatch-Hill post-war resolution which is now pending in con-

gress. John K. Ruckelshaus Jr., chairman of the post-war council, says that the luncheon will be open to all Republicans, regardless of views. He expects a large crowd to attend. The committee members think that Senator Ball’s address will provide the right kind of kick-off for their campaign to keep the Republican party from sliding back to the isolationism of the 20's. 2 2 2

43 To Lose Jobs

EXPIRATION OF the state milk control law on June 30 will have little effect as producers and distributors in most areas have agreed to maintain voluntarily many of the present regulations. Such agreements have been made here and at Marion and Kokomo. And agreements are being worked out at Logansport, Richmond and Peru. Concurrent federal and state orders are in effect in the Ft. Wayne and La Porte areas and the distributors in those areas have asked the federal government to take over. Producers at New Albany and Jeffersonville have asked that their area be added to the Louisville area, which is under federal order. Expiration of the milk control law will toss 48 state employees out of jobs. Included are Charles Dailey, board attorney; C. Wright Humrickhouse, executive secretary, and the administrators in the various areas. William Wilson, the local milk administrator, is in 1A and expects to be inducted after June 30.

No Candidate Shortage

ONE THING SURE in the political scene is that the Republicans won't have to draft anyone to take a nomination for state office next year. So great is the feeling of optimism in party circles that already there is a host of potential candidates out touring the state to size up their chances for winning the nomination for a minor office. State Treasurer James Givens and State Auditor Richard T. James cannot seek renomination because of the two-term limit and it is these two offices in which interest is being evidenced. Rep. Elmer Weller (R. Dale) called on Republican officials at the state house yesterday and admitted he was thinking of making the treasurer's race. Also regarded as a likely candidate for treasurer is Alva Burch, Evansville @ty controller. Frank T. Millis, G. O. P. house floor leader in the 41 session and now one of the top men in the state civil defense setup, is regarded as the top man in the field of candidates for the auditorship. There is considerable interest, too, in the lieutenant governorship. Lieut. Gov. Charles Dawson is regarded as a possible candidate for governor and reportedly eye-

SRLS HANDLE DEADLY GASES

Waive Glamour to Conduct Research in Chemical War Weapons.

By Science Service CAMBRIDGE, Mass, May 13.— Dangerous gases, corrosive chemicals and deadly liquids are handled daily here by a group of girls, most of them hardly out of their teens. Working without the glamour of military uniform, clothed in iaboratory coats, with faces protected by transparent masks, often wearing grotesque gas masks and thick rubber gloves, this scientific group works long hours at the Chemical Warfare Service Laboratory at the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These girls are helping to develop new methods of chemical defense and offense, an important part of the war deparmtent’s warfare. Many of the girls recruited from local schools and colleges are filling scientific and technical jobs that traditionally have been held by men, War department officials, in announcing the important services of these feminine scientists, praised also their “ability to say nothing about their work when off the job.” Titrating, weighting, distilling and carrying out new chemical processes, these girls help rush experiments to meet any eventualities of chemical warfare. Others in the group build optical instruments, operate testing machines and construct delicate apparatus that can be seen only through the use of a microscope.
