FOR THE first time in its 13-year-old radio career, the New York Philharmonic-Symphony will have a sponsor. Beginning Sunday, May 23, at its regular time, 2 p. m. over WFBM, the orchestra will begin a new 52-week series of concerts.

An important feature in the precedent-breaking will be the intermission spot, which will be directed by Carl Van Doren, historian, literary critic and author of the Pulitzer prize-winning biography, “Benjamin Franklin.” In what he calls “Our American Scriptures,” Van Boren will recreate the atmosphere and scene in which memorable utterances were delivered. Noted actors each week will read the utterances themselves. In all probability, such memorable occasions as Patrick Henry's “give me liberty or give me death” will be epitomized. Over a hundred years old, the New York Philharmonic-Symphony is a direct outgrowth of the New York orchestra, gave its first concert Dec. 7, 1842, in the Apollo rooms on lower Broadway in New York city. The program, played by 63 musicians, featured Beethoven's immortal fifth symphony.
