OFFICIALS REVIEW MENTAL PROBLEM

Responsibility for care of mental cases will be reviewed by city, county officials and medical authorities at 3:30 p. m. Friday in the office of Mayor Tyndall, The mayor pointed out that a number of county jail prisoners, although obviously mental cases, were deprived of immediate medical attention because of overcrowded conditions in the city hospital insanity ward. He said the city may be forced to expand its mental treatment facilities just as it did in dealing with the venereal disease and tuberculosis problems. :

GEORGE TO PUSH TAX SUBSTITUTE

Favors 75% Instead of Full|

Forgiveness in Pay-Go Proposal.

WASHINGTON, May 12 (U. P). —Chairman Walter F. George (D. Ga.), of the senate finance committee today announced he will offer a substitute tax plan embodying 75 per cent forgiveness of each individual’s tax levy George made his decision as the senate met to debate the 100 per cent forgiveness plan that his finance committee has voted for, 13-8. He said his substitute would be only for the forgiveness section of the committee’s bill. He would retain the section providing for cur-|RA rent collection of income taxes through a 20 per cent deduction from payrolls. George said he was definitely opposed to 100 per cent forgiveness on the grounds that it would almost inevitably require new tax legislation later this year to finance the war program. Fears Higher Taxes

He said that forgiving 75 per cent of the 1942, and collecting the balance in equal annual installments during the next two years, would not work undue hardship on any taxpayer. At the same time, he said, it would net the treasury more than $2,000,000,000 revenue in the next two years above the committee plan. George said earlier that he feared complete forgiveness would require higher income levies this year to meet costs of the war program. The same argument was raised yesterday by Senator Robert M. La Follette (Prog. Wis.), in a one-man minority report. He said that any additional tax burden would fall on individuals with income ranging from $1500 to $25,000 a year.
