LABOR AFFAIRS AT CROSSROADS

Gongress May Act This Week on Restrictive

Legislation.

By FRED W. PERKINS Times Special Writer

i. WASHINGTON, May jooms up as an important week,

x

x

serhaps a crucial one, for the forces | in congress that have been trying)

Since the war emergeney began to Shact restrictive laws against labor unions.

Outcome of their efforts will be

ndicated by what further teeth the aouse military affairs committee in-

serts in the Connally anti-strike gill, which passed the senate by a]

gig vote last Wednesday. It will be

shown definitely by house and sen-| ate action on the revamped meas-| ure, as well as by whether Presi- |

dent Roosevelt will wish to use and| be successful in power.

. All of these developments depend ih a large degree on whether John| L. Lewis maintains his threat of) another and probably longer na-|

Hon-wide coal-mining strike. If Mr: Bewis should unexpectedly recede | ffom his adamant attitude against settlement of the coal dispute by

ghe national war labor board, con-|

gress would be more disposed to gbmpromise, and the president Would have backing for his confinued effort to keep labor affairs il his own hands.

+ Innocent May Suffer

The hig danger, as labor advogates see it, is that congress will be $6 intent on ‘getting Lewis” that f£ will place handcuffs on unions that have made a record of full performance in behalf of the war effort. Recognition of this danger was ghown Saturday in a Chicago area gonvention of the United Steelworkers of America (C. I. 0), which generally is regarded as a “good” union, when there was a big vote ahd a demonstration in favor of a laration that the United Mine rker leader ‘‘is solely responsible for the present endangerment of the war effort and the entire labor movement by his irresponsible acibn in the recent national coal

shrike." “The current “C. I. O. News” says that the senate, in passing the Connélly bill, took “full advantage of the John L. Lewis strike in the coal lds.” The same publication says torially, “to vent its indignation against one lone-wolf labor leader— gohnected with none of the three major groupings of organized labor “=the senate majority passed a bill t slaps all organized workers in e face and endangers their $hions.”

2 Miners Journal Bitter

Hrne United Mine Workers Journal, jokesman for the Lewis union of ore than half a million men, has sbime observations of its own. Comenting on operations of present ny and threats of other unorable statutes, it says, “when all is said and done, the crowd really responsible for all this skuldoggery against labor are those fluinky ‘labor leaders’ who doublegrossed labor for a miserable reward of petty political favors, and the servile snobbery of being allowed th bask in the reflected glory of the Washington big shots.”
