each protesting his ‘innocence. . + They were Eli Shonbrun, 34, and John Cullen, 45, who joined their talents : with thdse of Madeline . Webb, Oklahoma college graduate and ‘ex-showgirl, in the Killing" of irs. Susan Flora Reich, wealthy Polish’ refugee. Shonbrun, raised ‘a Jew, became 8 Catholic in his last 24 hours of life and was led to the chair hy the Rev. Bernard Martin, who per-|. formeg the save service for Cullen. Two hours before he died, Shonbrun received from: Warden ‘Robert J. Kirby a letter from Madeline, but its contents were not revealed. Shonbrun, the ‘first to’ die; stood beside. the - electric . chair to utter : his last words to Father Martin.

‘Innocent, Both Say

“Forgive me, father,” he said. “They crucified an innocent girl and now they are going to ‘kill an innocent man.” Cullen, who was a stoic during the trial, appeared far more distraught than his partner as he entered the death chamber. He, too, stood ‘beside the chair to utter his last words. “I'm about to meet my God,” he said, waving his arms in a clumsy gesture, “and I want to repeat again—Governor Dewey, I am innocent of any crime.”

Everybody on Board 49-7 Pitches In When It's Tough

(This is the eighth of a series of articles explaining the work of

county rationing boards.)

By. HELEN RUEGAMER : The workers and board members of ration board 49-7 are operating their own business—the ration business. From the nine paid employees to the seven volunteer board members, the workers take pride in their smooth-working ration board and satis-

fied customers,

Everybody knows how to do everybody else's job, and when the going

is tough, both paid and unpaid rationers pitch in and help out until the rush is over.

According to Joseph L. Hall, the board’s chief clerk, several hundred lost ration bfoks are their main source of worry at present.

Troubles Are Varied

But from time to time the board has been plagued with various troubles, but there's a solution to them all, Mr. Hall explained. Located at 1524 N. Illinojs st., the board’s district includes an unusual number of restaurants, many of
