It is now expected that the Gerpans will demand further mansacrifices by the Finns but bn does not attach much imtance to the Nazi suggestion that eé Germans will dispatch further peditionary forces to Finland. ie same statements are equally
applicable to the Swedish situation and the new, stiffer Swedish attitude toward Germany is almost certainly attributable to the same belief held in Stockholm. It is responsiblly believed in London that Germany can reckon on employing against Russia this summer only about 25 per cent of the forces it disposed at the opening of the Russo-German war. The Russians certainly are not depleted to the same extent. This, plus Mediterranean preoccupations, suggests that the Germans are not embarking needlessly on new over-water expeditions.
ALLIED PLANES FIRE
GEN. MacARTHUR'S « HEADQUARTERS, Australia, April 30 (U. P.).—Allied heavy bombers touched off fires and explosions in the Japanese seaplane base at Halong and probably destroyed two of 15 intercepting enemy fighters, a communique said today. All planes returned safely from the raid on the base on Amboina island, 650 miles northwest of Darwin, Australia. The fliers reported they probably damaged another of the fighters that rose to meet them. The fires were set in the barracks and hangars at Halong, which is in the Netherlands East Indies. Except for a raid by medium units against Koepang, on Timor, where fires were kindled, other allied action yesterday was confined to forays by single bombers.
NEW DELHI, April 30 (U. PJ). —Sharp fighting of a local nature between British and Japanese forces in Burma, possibly indicating feeler thrusts by both sides in preparation for stronger attacks, was reported in a communique today.
