QUISLING LOSES
On Puppet Premier of
Occupied Norway.
By PAUL GHALI
Co nt, 1843, by The Indianapolis Times 7 oe d The Chicago Dally News, In Inc.
BEND. April 29.—The latest Stockholm dispatches. disclose that the puppet premier of Norway, Vidkun Quisling, following his recent interview with Hitler, is being more and more shorn of his powers by
. the German occupiers whose tentacles have gE now taken a firm hold of almost all sections of the Quisling administration. . Some ministries have been taken over completely by the Germans. Tr Thus, Minister Mr. Ghali of pyplic Works Hustad has just been replaced by an 8. S. (elite guard) man while ‘a German liaison officer has been appointed to the shipping ministry ‘with the special task of “supervising” Minister Irgens. Both Mustad and Irgens, Norwegian circles here state, are comparatively recent Quisling adherents in whose “reliability” the Germans never have shown much faith. Significant is Hustad’s replacement by an S. S. man. In Norweglan developments, .these days, gestapo chief Henrich Himmler’s hand becomes daily more apparent. Other . Quisling ministers; the usually .. well . informed - - Swedish newspaper Syenska. Dagbladet : reveals, may no.longer issue decrees unless these -have been first :approved by the occupational autherities. As for Quisling himself, he must now call on reich’s commissioner Joseph Terboven every Wednesday to talk over questions and discuss the agenda of the regular Thursday meetings of his cabinet. Only such measures as bear Terboven’s signature may be submitted to the council of ministers the following day Another new indignity that Norway’s puppet ruler must now suffer is the constant presence in his private residence, Schloss Gimle, of a Nazi liaison. officer whose job it Is “to keep a watchful eye” on Quisling.. Norwegian observers here believe that these latest Nazi measures presage the complete taking over of Norway’s administrational system by the German occupiers,
Seek Increase in: Civilian Supplies WASHINGTON, April 29 (U.
P.). — War Production Board
Chairman Donald M. Nelson plans further reorganization of the office of civilian supply to insure the production and distribution of sufficient quantities of essental civilian items, it’ was learned today. Nelson recently named Arthur D. Whiteside to succeed Joseph L. Weiner as head of OCS and. made Whiteside a WPB vice chairman. The senate banking and currency committee has approved legislation to make OCS a separate agency—a move which Nelson has opposed. The senate committee contends that civilian needs have been neglected. The name of the OCS is to be changed to the office of civilian requirements, officials said. Nelson is expected to issue an order soon broadening “Whiteside’s authority so that civilian needs will get more attention in the allocating of critical materials. *
