Earl Carroll s Carnival
A TWO-BIT extravaganza billed as Earl Carroll's “Vanities” assembles a chorus of scantily-clads on the stage of the Circle this week for 50 minutes of overdressed burlesque and five acts of vaudeville.
It has the flavor of a medicine show without Indians and not much
medicine.
But it put me in mind of Painless Paxton's annual spring festival
at Deer Run, Pa. As soon as the rains had passed and the. creek had gone down and the mud flats dried a little, you could expect old Painless around the mountain with his traveling dental clinic. Old Painless carried his own extravaganza on the side. It was
. almost as good as the circus and ,
it was free. He had a cast of native Americans—Sitting Bull, who sat on the platform wrapped in his blanket spouting words of wisdom; Hiawatha, who juggled and stood on one hand, and Minnehaha, who looked like she came off a calendar, and performed what was billed on’ the side of Painless’ wagon as an Indian love dance, with feathers. The farmers and the miners came from miles around. Painless’ caravan consisted of two wagons, one for dentistry and the other for the troupe.
| Painless’ Technique
- AFTER THE show, which also lasted about 50 minutes, including a lecture on oral hygiene from Painless, who, as far as I know, coined the phrase “see your dentist before it hurts,” the den-
tistry part of the program began. As the old practitioner opened his arms to welcorhe the sufferers, Sitting Bull, Hiawatha and a kid in overalls picked up cornets and started to blow. It only cost you'a buck to step right up and have it out in full view of everybody, as the doc pointed to the sign over the grue-some-looking dental chair advertising the painless feature of the operation. Presently, the crowd would eject a customer who would advance hesitantly up the steps to the wagon and look around him sheepishly. The crowd would be talking and the cornets playing sweet and low, and you could see Painless in his white smock conferring with the patient and the patient opening wide to show doc the tooth with a finger, Doc would pat the sufferer on the back, sit him gently down into the .chair and little Minnehaha, now attired in a white uniform, would flutter around with her ministrations and collect the buck. Everytime she'd hold the patient’s hand, his friends in the crowd would hoot and holler, and

NEIGHBORHOODS
Minnie would smile and pass a hand over the gent’s brow. » » » ’
No Teeth Pulled PRESENTLY, doc would emerge from the curtains which. enclosed the cubby where he kept his tools and announce, publicly, that if the "patient said it hurt him afterwards, he could have his money back, which pleased everybody. Painless was always fair that way. As the operation began, the cornets suddenly would start to
- blast with the' chorus of “John
Brown's Body” and you could see Painless take his stance and yank. If the victim ever hollered, nobody ever heard him, because those cornet players .could blast
like the noon whistles in the.
Monongahela valley. It was all over and the patient would get up on his feet and suddenly the trumpets would quit. Then Painless would hold up the molar, the victim would grin, a little weakly, and Painless would say in a loud voice: “Now, did I hurt you, son?” And the patient would shake
his head “No!” and the cornets
would take up the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” After that, Painless would assist the patient down the steps and his friend would carry him home. Well, I guess 1 got off the subI don’t want to
I repeat that they are not pulling teeth over at the Circle this week. But they could.

A PICTURE about a reporter stationed in Moscow who misses one of the greatest scoops of the last 10 years by overlooking the Nazi invasion of Russia ought to be funny. When his excuse for missing the story is that he thought the German army marching in was just “another one of those parades,” you can be sure of.it. And then, if it's Bob Hope who plays the reporter, rest assured that he -will do it to
perfection—well, almost. “They Got Me Covered,” starring ‘Bob and Dorothy Lamour, began its first run in the neighboorhoods this week, It’s an excellent vehicle pon for Bob. who is given free rein to display his comic talents. It has been said of him that just to see him is enough to make § one laugh at, or with him, as the case may be. The movie is, a a: story about Bob Hope Robert Kittredge, “ace” reporter for the Amalgamated News Agency, who tries to win the Pulitzer prize for reporting an exclusive story about axis agents in the United States. He is aided and abetted—and also helped out of much trouble— by Christine Hill, manager of his agency's Washington bureau,
. played by Dorothy Lamour.
The plot is sprinkled freely with much slapstick, gags -and some really hilariously funny sequences, Look for the scene in which Hope has to pose as a mannequin on a bicycle. ’ “They Got Me Covered” is playing today at the Fountain Square, Rivoli and Zaring, and will open at the Irving tomorrow. - ° » z =» . . THE DRIVE-IN theater, on Pendleton pike opposite Ft. Harrison, begins dts fourth season tonight with a showing of “Lucky Legs,” starring Jinx Falkenburg as the owner of the “gams,” and the army movie, “When Jopnny Comes Marching Home.” The theater has arranged its programs to feature two shows nightly, and to change its program every Sunday and Thursday. A midnight show will be shown Saturday. Tomorrow the Drive-In will present the “Pied Piper,” with Monty Woolley. » » 8

fers, rejecting a request to discuss shortages of aviation gasoline pro-
ducing equipment ‘allegedly caused
by the synthetic rubber program, to-
day was on an inspection tour of synthetic plants. Jeffers turned his back on the request of War Production Board Chairman Donald M. Nelson to sit in on a council with Undersecretary of War Robert M. Patterson and try to mediate the gasoline-rubber dispute. He said only that Patterson's charges were “the most violent and unprovoked attack which a public servant has ever had to sustain.” Patterson had said that Jeffers
‘theld up the output of 100-octane
gasoline for badly needed fighter planes and bombers by wrangling “super-priorities” on scarce materials for construction of the synthetic rubber plants.
Jeffers “Boiling Mad”
Flatly refusing to cancel a planned trip to these plants in Louisiana, Texas and California, Jeffers left Washington late yesterday “boiling mad, the boiling maddest Irishman in the country,” according to his associates. There was no indication whether he will be back in time for a congressional investigation of the TOW next week. Patterson attended Nelson's session, along with Deputy Oil Administrator Ralph K. Davies and WPB's director of scheduling, Ralph Cordiner. It was at earlier conferences here, the army charges, that Jeffers used the club of “protect the home front lest it crack” to divert valves, gauges and other equipment which the high octane program, the navy shipbuilding program and the rubber program need. Meanwhile, two senate committees ordered separate investigations, The Truman committee will go to work on the matter Tuesday. A senate agriculture subcommittee which for months has tried to get more emphasis placed on the alcohol synthetic rubber program also ordered an investigation, “If the charges against Jeffers are true,” Chairman Gillette said, “he ought to resign from his office or be forced to do so. If not, those responsible for them should be ready to offer their resignations.”

Superior Judge William R. McKay granted the British actor permission to change his original plea from guilty to not guilty. Then, McKay dismissed the perjury indietment against him. McKay had placed Atwill on five years probation Oct. 15 after the actor pleaded guilty to the perjury charge, admitting he had “lied like a gentl " about the stag movies he showed to audiences at his home. Atwill had petitioned the court for a termination of the probationary period so that he could get a job acting again. McKay said the Hays office had restricted the actor's appearance in
