War Department Says Lack Of Information Was - Factor.

WASHINGTON, April 23 (U.P). <A war department official yesteve day defended the policy of keeping ‘details of the Tokyo raid recret for

S. war activities than we do about theirs. “The enemy has a wealth of information regarding our developments and procedure which is denied to us as to their forces,” he said. and in particular shipping, the launching of carriers, and so forth, are. well known to them with complete accuracy. “On the other har learn of their similat activities is obtained in the hard way and in the case of Japan, in particular, in a very limited manner. ‘Odds Against Us’

“The odds in this war are heavily against us in the matter of military information and the present reaction regarding the. Doolittle raid is an example of a dangerous approach to this entire problem.” The official's reference to. a “dangerous. approach” apparently was aimed at those who have criticized the war department for waiting .a year to disclose the raid details. . A special reason for keeping the raid secret temporarily, the official said, was’ to hide from the Japanese the fact that after the fliers

‘had taken off from the aircraft| §& carrier Hornet, the ship was rushed |

south to participate in the battle of the Coral sea. x Other reasons for secrecy, he sald. were to protect American fliers w had landed behind the en

suspense over the possibility of a second raid.

‘four targets — descending para-

chutists, planes diving, gliders landing and planes in level flight.

Built to Scale

The targets are small and are about 15 yards from the firing line, from which the soldiers bang away with .22 caliber rifles. In -battle they'd be using the heavier, regulation rifles. Built to scale, the targets appear the same size to the men as airplanes and parachutists would at 200 and 300 yards. The, airplane and glider targets move on cables about 20 feet a second while the parachutist targets descend several feet a second. Movement of the airplane targets appears to the soldiers as would an airplane at 200 yards traveling at about 200 miles an hour. The parachute ‘targets simulate parachutists descending 17 feet per second at 300 yards.

eight ships on a single patrol. Actually, the official toll of the Wahoo's latest patrol tells only part of the story. Not counted in tonnage credited to the Wahoo are another cargo ship damaged and a trawler and two motor sampans wrecked.

Just Like Minnows

“The trawler and sampans, it was explained, are like minnows — too small to be counted. A boat must be of more than 500 tons to be rated as a “ship.” Morton, a wild-haired, red-faced naval officer, fingered a good luck stone sent him from Virginia as he told of the Wahoo’s exploits. “After reaching the Japanese shipping center,” he said, “it was a case of sight, track shoot and sink enemy ships.” Most, ships sank within two to

Wahoo's torpedoes, but the most

ited to the Wahoo's deck guns. Prefer Deck Guns

“The crew likes to attack with deck guns because they then can

“The tracers made pattern as they sank that freighter—the third in a matter of a few hours—during a hrilliant sunrise, The crew had

to board the ship and sail it home as & prige, but this was impossible because the attack was near the Japanese coast. §_ “The crew .formed a boarding party known as the ‘Wahoo’s commandos for boarding Japanese vessels and seeking fresh fish,” but had no opportunity to go into action.” The Wahoo expended all its torpedoes on the patrol, Morton said. It was depth-charged several times by Japanese destroyers and once by a plane, but suffered neither damages nor casualties.
