Pertiips the most impressive ac-|
tivity is the plastic surgery which literally builds new faces from old. Such surgery has advanced far beyond that of 25 years ago, for modern war carries with it a scourge of destructive burns from fuel tank blasts and from high explosives. “ Plasma and the sulfa drugs, the outstanding life savers of this war, have greatly reduced the fatal toll of burns. New: inventions like the Pidgett Dermatone are working miracles at Walter Reed and elsewhere to remove the scars these burns have left. The Dermatone is the invention of a Kansas City physician which enables skin to be removed, in calibrated layers as thin as’ 24-thous-andths of an inch. The spot where healthy skin is removed heals quickly and, in less complicated cases, the grafted skin “takes” successfully in ‘two weeks. Build New Face Thanks to this invention and improved surgical technique, a. young ‘air force major, horribly burned in a crackup, is finding escape at Walter Reed from the lifetime of disfigured humiliation that once would ‘have faced him, His nose has been tirely rebuilt. New lips and eyeids have been grafted, livid scars ave been reduced to thin lines, and jis - seared, contracted hands are once more usable. Another amazing invention finding its first military use is the enecephalograph, which amplifies and

IRISH RAPPED. FOR
LONDON, April 16 (U. P.) —Prime Minister Winston Churchill yesterday deplored the: circumstances whereby drafted. American troops are made to “stand on -guard” in northern Ireland while many of the natives are free of conscription for such duties. “It certainly is an unsatisfactory situation that large numbers of
1Americans should be taken by com-
pulsion: from their homes and made to stand guard while large numbers of local inhabitants are under no such obligation,” Churchill said. His comment in the house of commons was in response to inquiries regarding conscription in northern Ireland. He “sajd he had no announcement ‘to make on the subject.
