© GARY STEEL QUTPUT CURBED BY STRIKE
GARY, Ind, April 12 (U. P).— An unauthorized strike disrupted
production today at the huge Car-|
steel mills, choking off
the output from 22 of the plan's 88]
open hearth furnaces. The ‘walkout, which began ate yesterday, showed signs of ending when about half of the 200 striking employees wére replaced by employees on the 8.2. m, shift who re«sumed About 100 others on the shift continued the stoppage. The walkout. halted almost half of the open hearth production at the sprawling Gary works, which are among the largest in the world. _ Employees on the 8 a. m. shift resumed work at 14 of the 22 furnaces, but company officials said it would be eight hours before the furnaces would be in production again because the fires had been turned down and the steel removed.
Began About 6 P. M.
Officials of the C. I. O. United Steel Workers had tried to end the stoppage throughout the night. ~The walkout began about 6 p. m. yesterday when approximately 100 employees of shop 5, housing eight furnaces, stopped work. The stoppage was continued when the midnight shift reported for work, and a few hours later spread to shop 1, housing 14 furnaces. ‘ Company - spokesmen said the ‘walkout began when three employees of shop 5 failed to report - for work, and the rest of the crew refused to work with replacements from other shops. Union officials were unavailable for comment.
