ARMY, Tunisia, April 6.— (delayed).

“—When it attacked the axis’ narrow front between the salt lake Elfed Aja and the sea on April 6, the 8th army not only won another battle but forestalled a German “panzer attack against the American Jorces at El Guettar. . The German tanks, which had been detached from the axis forces facing the 8th army to support the {German panzer division opposite the armored forces of the 2d U. S. corps, commanded by Lieut. Gen. George ‘S. Patton Jr., were forced to dash back to the Wadi El Akarit line. to meet thé 8th army's latest threat.

. The 8th army opened its attack ‘against the enemy Akarit position with the usual heavy artillery bar

axis line through which it poured its armor. The German command saw what it was up against and decided that it could not hold out.

- By staging desperate counter-at-

tacks, the Nazi commanders covered up the withdrawal of their main

_ forces and left behind small but

determined groups of Germans to fight delaying actions.

Do Not Detach Your Stamp 17

YOU CAN'T buy those shoes if ration stamp 17 is detached from ration book one. 'The OPA said so again yesterday. With emphasis. ~ L. M. Hogan, Indianapolis district OPA commodity rationing officer, said that shoe dealers have appealed to the office for clarification of the regulation on the use of stamp 17 saying that they have been. approached by customers with loose shoe stamps. ~It is clearly and emphatically stated in the regulation,” Mr. Hogan said, “that the shoe stamp, like nearly all other ration stamps, is invalid except when” removed in the presence of the retailer. Acceptance of loose stamps and the attempt to present them to a dealer is a direct violation of the order and subject to punishment.”

SCOTT-STAAB CASE IS GIVEN TO JURY

The gcase of two former officials of the defunct Firemen’s Credit union charged with embezzlement was given to a criminal court jury today. This is the fourth attempt to try the case, the first énding when a juror became ill. The second ended in a deadlocked jury and the third was halted because a woman approached a juror in behalf of one of the defendants. The two defendants are Cecil F. Scott and John A. Staab, who were accused by the state of embezzling $50,000 from the credit union. Defense attorneys argued that the alleged shortage of funds was: due to

MME. CHIANG TO SEE HERSELF IN MOVIES

LOS ANGELES, April 9 (U. P.).— Mme. Chiang Kai-shek prepared today to see herself in pictures—as a silent star. The film, a complete record of Hollywood bowl speech ceremonies, was shot by James Wong Howe, cameraman for “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” In technicolor, but without sound, which is yet to be synchronized, it will be .run:off privately for Mme. Chiang and members of her staff in the Ambassador hotel theater. Final plans on her departure,

‘scheduled for tomorrow, were ‘ex-

pected .to be complete today, but it was. believed that because of Mme. Chiang’s precarious health, she will go direct to New York and into seclusion there, postponing her visit to Washington until later.

TENSION RISES -

‘Heated Discussions’ Going On Between Partners, Europe Says.

Copy so Datle News Tae. SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE, April 9.—A series of .well-founded reports reveal that as a result of the Tunisia reverses and the approaching danger of war on Italian soil, relations between the two main axis partners are passing through a period of extreme tension which may well be the most serious crisis of their history. . Many observers believe that “heated discussions” are now going on between the two countries’ high commands. The background of these talks is the intense desire of Italy to marshal its dispersed forces on the Italian peninsula in order to be

% ready and “powerful enough” for|

the inevitable allied assault. Germany, -on the other hand, maintains that Italy’s contribution to the defense of Europe, whether in the Balkans or in the Reich itself, in the form of Italian workers for German factories, is vital for Italy’s own self-protection. According to reliable authority, Italy has recently made known its wish to recall most, if not all, of its 30 divisions today taking part in the fight against the Jugoslav partisans. This demand the Nazis are strongly opposing as it would mean a drastic change in Balkan military dispositions at the very moment when maximum effort is being demanded from the axis satellites there. Italy has also asked for the immediate return of its 250,000 workers, busy in the Reich’s factories who it considers would be better employed at home. The Nazis, it is believed, have given way to this demand.

Axis Preparing Public

For Loss of Tunisia

LONDON, April 9 (U. P)—A Swiss dispatch said today the German and Italian propaganda ministries have ordered axis newspapers to prepare their readers for the defeat and possible annihilation of their armies in Tunisia. Italian newspapers were reported to have responded in . some: cases with editorial pleas that the ItaloGerman forces make a last-man stand with the knowledge that “the fate of Italy is i nthe balance.” A broadcast over the Nazi Paris radio quoted Berlin circles as suggesting that a British fleet may be en route to the Tynisian coast, presumably to bombard the axis bridgehead from the sea and to attempt to prevent any evacuation of German Marshal Erwin Rommel’s troops. If the suggestions are borne out by events, the broadcast said, a great naval battle may be in the making. There still was no confirmation of a Madrid report that Adolf Hitler and Premier Benito Mussolini met in the Brenner pass yesterday to discuss the defense of Italy against an allied invasion.
