ly to juvenile court as a result of a meeting of police juvenile court auThortties and school officials yesterow { y. . L = In an effort to eliminate what was termed the source of the city’s juve- _ nile delinquency problem, Police Chief Beeker said police will be ordered to question and, if necessary, take into custody youngsters found idling in the downtown district during school hours, - Dr. DeWitt S. Morgan, school su-

perintendent, instructed principals

to report habitual truancy to juvenile court, and Judge Mark W. - Rhoads said child neglect warrants would be filed against parents of those absentee pupils. Truants and Delinquency ~~ Decision to crack down on the *“hookey players” was made after those at the meeting attacked truancy as the very core of the delinquency problem. ©. Declaring absenteeism from school as ‘just as serious an offense these days as absenteeism from war ; plants,” Dr. Morgan said, “We're : going to see to it that all children will either be doing something ‘worth-while or acting as if they in‘tended to do something worthwhile.” Judge Rhoads traced the typical * “primrose path” of persistent deJdinquents as “truancy, petty thefts, ‘vandalism, auto stealing and armed _ robbery. .. The judge said that he hoped to install a special truancy board in “his court.

In Gratitude

Guadalcanal Chief Offers Wife to Yanks For Medical Aid.

WASHINGTON, April 8 (U. P.) .—Fighting Chief Poi of Guadalcanal was so grateful for medical assistance rendered by American soldiers that he offered to donate one of his wives in appreciation. The offer was gracefully declined. Poi was shot three .times in the arm and once in the thigh’ when attacked by six Japanese last November. Chief Poi was credited with killing four of the enemy. He was given emergency treat-

placed a cast on his arm. The chief was unwilling to remove the cast, so Capt. Louis Kreindler, Cincinnati, O., and Lieut. Charles H. Peckworth, Ridgewood, N. J., led a small patrol through the jungle to the chief’s village and took care of him, Poi had seven wives and seven children. He was willing to part with one wife as an expression of his appreciation,

Seymour School Children ‘Tagged’

P.)—More than 1800 Seymour school children were issued identification tags today as a war emergency measure. : “These tags are primarily for identification purposes in case of bombings or other war emergencies,” Mrs. R. G. Wieder, district director of the parent-teacher organization, said. They were issued through the co-operation of the civilian defense organization, the P.-T. A. and school authorities. Each tag hears an identification number and the words, “Seymour, Indiana.” They are made of tough pressed fiber and are almost indestructible, and are worn

«suspended on cords around the

children’s necks. : Multiple lists are filed with the P.-T. A group and the city civilian defense control center. : “Every school child in ‘Seymour will wear the tag every day,” Mrs. Wieder said.
