VENEREAL RATE ‘SHOWS DECLINE

Army’s Health Campaign Shows: Results, War

Department Says.

WASHINGTON, March 26 «(U. P)—The ‘almy’s venereal disease rate was reduced substantially in

1942 compared with 1941 and is falling rapidly this year as the result of an unremitting campaign by army medical authorities, the war department announced today. The 1942 rate was 37.8 cases per 1000 men compared with 40.5 in 1941. In January of this year the rate translated to an annual-basis was 25.2 per 1000 men compared with 45 per 1000 during January, 1942. Lieut. Col. Thomas B. Turner, chief of the venereal disease control branch of the surgeon general’s office, said four media were employed in the campaign:

Education a Factor

1. Co-operation of local, state and federal law enforcement authorities. 2. Education. 3. Assignment of full-time venereal disease control officers to camps of 20,000 men or over and part-time officers to other camps. 4. Provision of prophylactic facilities. The lowest venereal disease rate in army history was in 1939, when it ran 29.6 per 1000. The rate ‘mounted sharply with mobilization.
