FIELD HEADQUARTERS, North Africa, March 24 (delayed)—Four days of fighting along the Mareth line and east of Gafsa have been! sufficient to show Marshal Erwin |

Rommel is still in fighting trim and has lost none of his talent as military trickster. Even at his ‘most critical moments, Rommel has required the most careful kind of watching. Likewise, in the Gafsa area, he has shown plenty of punch and deception and has never done the obvious. Throughout the fighting he has exhibited his old knack for making two tanks or guns do the work of four by whipping them from one position to another in rapid succession. : An example of his eccentricity was given yesterday when, with the American troops in fresh occupation of Maknassy, uncomfortably j| near the sea in the rear of his main §| fighting machine, he disdained any attempt of‘ counter-attack at that place and instead suddenly struck where he felt we would least expect it—east of El Guettar., Again, on the Mareth line, he chose to stage his fiercest show near El Hamma at the western end -jof the German positions, rather than on the main Yront near the sea.
