‘QUICK VICTORY’ HOPES DIMINISH
Cold Water. on the Optimists.
By HARRISON SALISBURY United Press. Staff Correspondent LONDON, March 25.—Prime ‘Minister Churchill’s assertion that Germany “might” be beaten in 1944, but
cold water on the optimists who have
been predicting an Easter invasion of Europe and defeat of the Nazis by harvest time. No one knows when the European war may end, but it was pointed out today that Churchill’s latest prediction is more pessimistic . than his previous ope, and there is no one in| §; better position to make predictions than Great Britain’s top war boss. Speaking in the house of commons on Feb. 11, he referred to a strong allied shipping position which He hoped would be attained by the ‘end of 1944 “if the war is still going on at that time.”

Continue.
Travel rationing will be necessary if “persons who must travel are, kept from it through movement of those not on essential business,” | Joseph B. Eastman, director of the, office of defense transportation, said yesterday. He came here to attend the oneday conference at ‘the Lincoln hotel of the Shipper-Carrier conference of Indiana. © . Predicts Long War The pinch on transportation will, continue, he said, as long as the war lasts. And he expects it to be | a long war. ] “Too,” he said, “it is not impossible that the gasoline shortage in the Eastern states may extend, throughout the country before the, war is over. “The rubber situation is not dasing and even if it were, there would be other shortages, such as vehicles, gasoline, repair parts and manpower. We are not over the hump.” ° a

There were three major developments during that period: . 1. The Russian. winter offensive abated and the Germans staged -a strong comeback to take Kharkov. 2. The Germans launched their major spring submarine campaign and claimed the sinking of- about three-quarters of a million tons of allied ships in the first three’ weeks of March. 3. Marshal Erwin - Rommel suc-
Tunisia, although the big allied push started just before Churchill's latest speech. There is no way of telling whether these events caused any. change in the allied time-table since its details are a deep military secret.
