Detroit Bar Answers. Call For Inspectors in War Plants.

Ings a week at 9 o'clock, Harry ‘Merrick, & member of one of De-

troit's leading law firms, arrives at

his office in the Fidelity building

from the fashionable suburb of Grosse Pointe, If you have need of legal otsisia ance, Merrick will be glad to oblige. But it would be advisable for you to make an early appointment. Because, six afternoons a week at } » well-made and well-pressed busi-

ness suit in a locker, changes to |

old clothes and shoes, puts on an apron and a painters cap, and - goes to work at the Detroit Steel Products Co.

He has ‘been leading this double]

life since Oct. 15, and he’s not slone in the distinction. For more than 500 members of the Detroit bar have pitched in to do a similar job. It all started when a couple of manpower - hungry Detroit war ‘plants appealed to the bar assoelation president for men above the average intelligence to do an inspection job on precision work. Ww

Rush of Volunteers Bince there were a number of

Detroit lawyers, especially - young

ones, who were having a hard time making ends meet, the bar associa- _ tion was glad to co-operate. The president’s appeal reached association members last April, just after Bataan fell. This may account for the fact that, instead of the expected handful, 260 lawyers applied - for war jobs . during the first week. Most of thém were placed with the Excello and Vickers companies, which make airplane parts. Merrick didn’t start work with the first batch because he really did not-.need an extra job, and because it is a long drive from his home or office to the factory. But once he started he has kept at it.

“Never Been Late”

“I've never been late to work,” he said, “and I've missed only two days since I started.” Merrick said that the courts are extremely co-operative in arrangAng the hours of hearings for at- ~ Yorneys on the 4-to-12 shift, and that factory foremen are equally . Understanding when ong of their litigating workmen is right in the middle of a closing argument when the whistle blows. “Half a dozen judges have complimented .me and other factory

"workers on the job that we're do-

ing, * Merrick said,
