VOICE from the Balcony ;

“The Three Inkspots :

THE INKSPOTS, more familiarly known as a quartet, are a trio et the Circle this trip, with one of the Spots blotted temporarily by pneumonia since the first week of January. He's Deke Watson, second tenor and comedy man, and former Shortridge, high school track star.

Deke’s getting along all right, though. The boys yesterday called

his room in the Detroit hospital where he’s recuperating and he har-

monized ‘with them over the phone, “The trio manages pretty well, relying heavily on Billy Kenny, the tall tenor-soprano, who was born here on Indiana ave. Billy gings “Every Night About This

Time” and Orvill Jones, another

Indianapolis boy, proceeds to work on it in the bass clef. They give with “If I Cared a Little Bit Less and You Cared a Little Bit More” and their famous “If I Didn’t Care.” Cadets at the army air force advanced flying school at Seymour have a treat coming when the Spots stage a special breakfast show there tomorrow morn- + ing. ” ” = ; "RUCIUS LEROY MILLINDER, glias Lucky, who became a master craftsman in the art of jive long before he could read notes, leads his phenomenal band through the inimitable Harlem school of impressionism, much to Joy of those present. Lucky himself appears in a ‘ “hunting - we - will - go” coat of scarlet, while the boys in the band gre decorated. with orange jackets. All of this prépares you for ‘the vision of a cream-colored bass fiddle which one of the boys thrums with vast enthusiasm. “Sister” Rosetta Tharpe serenades with Lucky's own oratorio, “I Want a Tall, Skinny Papa,” the companion piece to. his “Big, Fat Mama.” She also swings a few spirituals and creates her own boogie rhythm on her guitar. Trevor Bacon, the band’s tenor, whose relatives live on Indiana ave., makes several welcome contributions, the names of which, if any, escape me. Then arises Tab Smith with his first love, the alto sax, and what comes out is “I Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” which makes the fans kick up their heels and holler fire. : 2 ” 2 So on with the show, and the miracle is that the joint hasn't burned down yet. Red and Curly, tap artists, bedt out some mighty interesting rhythms with their feet. and a set of traps. You can sense it in the air that the auto-

to let go. Following this incendiary phenomenon, Lucky and the band lightup with their famous cry in the night, “Savoy,” a delicate piece of flash jive that produces the same sensation as dropping 10 floors in a fast elevator. Lucky and Trevor climb up on the piano: and dance with sheer joy of living. The stage is in a frenzy - and you expect to hear the sirens any minute, when out comes Peg-Leg Bates, the onelegged dancer, who gives a demonstration in what he calls ‘“Pegology.” “Pegology” is the science of dancing on a peg-leg and Brother Bates is a wizard in that particular field. The rhythms he creates you have to hear to believe. And so it goes. The audience starts to applaud, but Peg-leg shouts—“Not yet!” He steps into a new rhythm. The audience starts to applaud again, “Not yet,” yells Peg-leg. “Can’t you let a man earn his livin?” He continues, finally tapping toward - the curtain, “Now!* he shouts. : Metaphorically speaking, the trumpets of Jericho blow, the multitude shouts and the walls come tumbling down.

His mother works in an aircraft factory. His father is in the army. “You will not be alive on March 20 unless you meet me at Gower and Santa Monica blvd. on Maich 19 with the money,” his most recent letter to the blond star reportedly said. By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Hollywood Correspondent

didn’t see her in Africa in her long underwear before it “named her America’s best-dressed screen star for 1943.

‘Miss Landis continued,’ “and when nobody was looking, I scratched, and I was a mess.” Kay Francis, Martha Raye and the best-dressed screen star were in Tunisia entertaining soldiers about the time the members of the academy were casting their ‘ballot in New York. “Sometimes it was cold and somietimes it was- hot,” Miss Landis said, “and we never knew how it was going. to be, so we started wearing that long woolen underwear as a matter of course.

“It Was Terrible”

“On a cold day it was. fine, but lumpy. lumpy, but like a hair shirt.” Miss Landis said she wouldn’t like ‘the .fashion academy to know, but that she wore a woolen undershirt and a pair of ribbed woolen panties. “Chopped off at the knee,” she said. “Perfectly awful. I think they would have looked better if they'd gone all thé way down to the ankle. “So every morning I'd get up and put on my woolen shirt and my woolen panties and I'd look at myself in the mirror. I couldn't help looking. If was terrible, a’ sort of fascination. Almost a horrible hypnosis.

. Bulges in Wrong Places

“I'd look and I'd see bulges in the wrong places and lumps and creases and it was frightening. Even before I began to itch. This looking at myself in the mirror got so bad that finally I left off my woolens one niorning. Then I went out and nearly sneezed my fcol head off.” Thereafter the ladies wore their wool union suits religiously, with their glamour gal clothes on top. They tried to keep their skirts down in the African breezes so that no soldier would get a glimpse of the ridges where the wool left off at the knees. “This would have been very disillusioning,” Miss Landis said.

Other Selections .

Miss Landis won the fashion honor in the screen classification. the other selections were: Stage, Judith Evely, winner of the drama league's award for the year’s best performance in “Angel Street”; radio, Hollace Shaw; public life, Winifred C. Stanley, New York con-|-gresswoman; business, Constance Luft Huhn, cosmetician, now in Nassau where she is visiting the Duchess of Windsor; society, Wendy Iglehart of New York, wife of Lieut. Douglas McCrary, now at Virginia Beach, Va.; junior society, Joan La Roche of New .York, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Chester La Roche; opera, politan soprano; concerts, Jeanette MacDcnald; journalism, Lorna Farrell, editor, The: Woman; sports, Gretchen Merrill, Boston Skating club, Boston; war work, Mrs. Dwight Davis, American Red Cross.
