Thdianapolis consumers will pay approximately 20 per cent moye for ice beginning Monday. » The increase will be a result of the price adjustments allowed the ice industries by the OPA to avert & threatened ice shortage here. Curtailment of mechanical refrigeration and the increased population of the city, together with the decrease in the productive activity of the ice companies, also have contriteg to the threatened shortage re. ’ New prices effective Monday are: For 100 pounds delivered to

water coolers, 60 cents, compared with the present price of 50. For ice delivered for commercial purposes the new prices will be 100 pounds, 50 cents; 125 to 500 pounds, 40 cents a hundred pounds; 525 to- 1800 pounds, 35 cents per hundred pounds; 1925 and up, 30 cents per hundred pounds. "HOME FRONT FORECAST

WASHINGTON, March 19.—When. the meat situation becomes

really tight, expect rationing to be geared to the needs of individuals. For example, if you do physically taxing work, you will receive larger rations than your neighbor who works behind a desk. OPA is studying this British type of rationing, and if there is a real food shortage, it will be adopted. ‘Newest unpatriotic chiselling . undermining efforts to conserve cloth is that of the woman who - buys maternity clothes though she doesn’t need them. She alters the dress, leaving the full width in the skirt and playing up the frills which are still allowed on maternity clothes, Sales of maternity clothes have gone up tremendously since the war started—but it’s not entirely due to the bumper crop of babies. It’s partly due to a these gals whe think they're being smart by getting around WPB orders. : Actually, if they were clothes-conscious they'd realize that a full skirt in a new dress is most definitely passe,

It Will Be Tough OPA officials fear that, by and large, the American public is

going to be shocked when point values of different kinds of meats

are announced. ° Though you may have been warned that there won't be much to go around, point values will: be so high that one steak a week may be all the meat you'll be able to buy.. Optimistic officials, however, hope that once meat rationing gets under way and the inevitable kinks in so large a program are ironed out, point values may be lowered.

8 s » 8 tJ . Vegetarian Diets

If you are a vegetarian by choice, you're out of luck because point rationing of canned fruits, vegetables and meat doesn’t make exceptions for you. But if you're under doctor’s orders and he prescribes a diet consisting of vegetables, fruits and no meat, then

Navalcade to Visit City Boosting Bond Sales for

New Vincennes.

Autographs of bond buyers in Tell City, Boonville, Mount Vernon and Vincennes have practically filled the stem of the truck-mounted model cruiser of the new Vincennes. But there is plenty of room left for Indianapolis bond buyers’ names. Local residents will have an opportunity, to sign their names on the ship tomorrow when the navalcade visits Monument circle and Féuntain Square.

Sales Lagging so Far The ship model is being used in connection with Indiana’s drive to buy “extra” war bonds to help build a new. cruiser to replace the Vincennes sunk last August off Guadalcanal. It is a part of the navalcade which is touring the state. It will be on the circle from noon until 4 o’clock and then move to Fountain Square. Sales reports through last Saturday, showed a total near $1,500,000 for the county, about $500,000 under the $150,000-a-day pace needed as Indianapolis’ share in paying

of six lectures on. gardening at the I. U. extension center, 122 E. Michigan st. ; . “It is wasteful,” Mr. Irwin said, “to attempt gardening in cramped, poorly drained, shady spots in the heart of the city, or within the branch or root spread of large trees, or on subsoil fill so often found in backyards. The odds are against you. He pointed out that a black walnut tree can kill tomato plants at 150 paces. : ' Soaked seeds will come up faster than unsoaked seeds, Mr. Irwin said. To soften up hard exteriors and hasten germination, seeds may be soaked a few hours before planting. He warned that corn need not be soaked and that it’s easy to overdo the beans. Gardens planted where there was sod will be bothered by cut worms for a couple of years anyway, the instructor said. These subterranean pests sneak out every night to lop off everything you've planted. .
