LONDON, March 19 (U. P).—The British navy held the eastern Mediterranean by a slender thread dur-
using an outnumbered. but never outclassed force of ships and planes in a series of actions that prevented the axis from sweeping eastward to the Indian ocean. The admiralty told the story of that valiant stand today in an official publication entitled “East of Malta, and West of Suez.” Forces fighting against the heaviest odds in British naval history prevented the fall of Malta, Suez, and- Alexandria, made possible campaigns in Abyssinia and Syria, and escorted 780 ships to North African ports. The admiralty revealed that the Suez canal once was completely blocked and that the situation at times was so desperate that single carrier-based airmen defended the British - Mediterranean fleet. * The 63-page book covered the campaign from September, 1939, to March, 1941, declaring that “in the early days of the war our naval forces achieved on sea the sort of thing the royal air force did in the
| Battle of Britain.”
Struck Italians : Facing greatly superior battle tonnage, the navy took the initiative in the early weeks of the war, gaining and maintaining control. British torpedo planes from the carrier Illustrious crippled half of the Italian battle fleet. in Taranto harbor Nov. 11, 1940.: Then the British boldly sailed into the battle of Matapan oh March 27, 1941, sinking three Italian cruisers and two destroyers without losing a ship. The admiralty account ends with
e | the battle of Matapan. It does not
describe the losses suffered in the battle for Crete. It includes an official account of the first naval battle of Oran. “France lay abased by her betrayers,” the publication said. “Misery and unrest swept the wardrooms
sapping its robust fighting spirit. It told of negotiations between the British and French which failed. The force based on Gibraltar “was compelled to open fire.” After long discussions, French men of war at Alexandria were demilitarized by their own officers. “Thus,” the publication said, “the curtain fell on one of the sorriest dramas ever enacted in war.”

TWO FREED IN GAMBLING CASE
Police Method: Contrary to Public Policy, Judge
- Says.
Police raiding methods have been given another setback in the courts. Two men charged with violation of the slot machine law and the al-
coholic beverage act in connection with the police raid on the K. of C. club, “1305 N. Delaware st., were discharged by George S. Dailey, judge pro tem in municipal court 3 yesterday. Judge Dailey sustained a motion to suppress evidence confiscated in the raid following testimony that a police officer in plain clothes entered the club without an invitation and without a search warrant.
Petition Denied
“Seizure of evidence by trickery and without due process -of law is against public policy” Judge Dailey said. The defendants in the case were Claude L. Stifferlen, who was charged with violation of the 1935 slot machine law, and Henry Bevins who was charged with violation of the alcoholic beverage law. A petition to return to the club six slot machines confiscated by police was denied by Judge Dailey but he ordered the money in the
machines returned to the operators.
WASHINGTON, March 18 (U. P.).— Martinique, Guadeloupe and
Lieut. (jg) Philip L. McHugh, native the service. ;
i|banner of Gen. Renrl Honore A | Giraud.
First indication that the French unity which is developed in North Africa is spreading to the western Hemisphere came yesterday when French Guiana, on tke north coast
of South America, declared allegiance to Giraud. Guiana’s stand was
in Algiers from Governor Rene Veber and from the mayor of Cayene, the capital. All the French possessions in this hemisphere had been under the administration of Admiral Georges Robert, with headquarters on Martinique. A year ago last Christmas he lost control of St. Pierre-Miquelon through a coup by the Fighting French forces and he now seems destined to lose the other colonies.
May Be Forced Out of Office
Robert's obstinate adherence to the repudiated regime of Marshal Henri Philippe Petain has caused a feeling of revolt among his subordinates. All of whom, according to information here, wish to join in the present resurgence of French national feeling. It was believed that Robert would have to yield or step out of office. The American action in suspending food shipments to Martinique also has created pressure on Robert from another quarter. The population has had no bread since March 1 and is demanding that Robert change his arbitrary stand and permit resumption of their food supplies. The overthrow" of Robert's obstinate administration would place all French colonies .on this side of the Atlantic in friendly hands. It was believed that if the impending negotiations for co-operation between Giraud and Gen. Charles de Gaulle are successful, some arrangement would ‘be made to place St. Pierre-Miquelon, the tiny islands near Newfoundland, under a new and friendly commissioner who would administer all the possessions.
