Japs Made Offensive Plans
Allied ground troops, cleaning out abandoned Japanese positions near the mouth. of the Mambare river on New Guinea’s north coast, found pill-boxes, a hospital; and other installations prepared for occupation by a large force. The positions were built in preparation for a future offensive by the troops recently destroyed in the annihilation of the 22-ship Japanese convoy in the Bismarck sea battle, the communique said. (Yesterday Elmer Davis, head of the office of war information, announced in Washington that only five out of 15,000 Japanese troops in the convoy had escaped.)
