LONDON, March 17 (U. P.)— German and Italian troops are hauling big siege guns into the Alps in eastern France preparatory to an attempt to blast thousands of resisting patriots from their mountain hideouts. Swiss reports said today. Martial law already has been declared throughout the Haute-Savoie border ‘region and axis troops were reported pouring into the area in a steady stream following the failure of. French mobile guards to dislodge the patriots. Numerous small-scale ‘clashes between the patriots and the Vichy-Italo-German forces were described in ‘Swiss dispatches, but- apparently no large-scale battle had developed. In some sectors, patriot bands were said to have attacked Italian sentries and isolated troop detachments by cutting their communications. while in other districts axis forces surrounded patriot groups.
Say Nazis Will Try to Blast French Patriots From Alps
"Many of the encircled patriots were guided safely through the axis lines by friendly peasants, however, a Madrid dispatch said. There appeared. little likelihood that the resistance in Haute-Savoie would flare into an open revolt
throughout France and the allied-
controlled Morocco radio broadcast an appeal to the Alpan patriots to bide -their time before attempting any offensive action. “We know of your heroic actions,” the broadcast said. “It’s not time yet for a general revolt.” Swiss sources suggested that many of the patriots might slip through the enemy lines and return to their homes to await the promised allied invasion. A fighting French spokesman in London, meantime, broadcast an appeal not to fight their “brothers, sons, your kith and kin,” but to join
them in resisting the axis,
