The Lady in Red

MISS ROSE BAMPTON, the

leading dramatic soprano of the

Metropolitan opera company, who bakes her own bread, is a diva who can appear in a concert hall draped in a two-toned gown of bright red and lavender and look beautiful. She sang with Fabien Sevitzky and the Indianapolis symphony orchestra at Murat theater over the weekend and it was like the sunrise of a clear spring day after a hard winter.

Any discussion of Miss Bampton’s program might depend upon one’s reaction to dramatic sopranos. Mine is sometimes allergic. However, the grander of of her voice, rich and ringing, can be compared to one of the major wonders of nature, Miss Bampton, herself, is a natural person and one of the most agreeable artists we have had around town in some time. She was telling backstage about her encounter with an upper berth on a trip from New York to London, Ontario, where she was scheduled to give a concert. Transportation being what it is, artists like Miss Bampton have adventures, especially when they are 6 feet tall and hefty in a Junoesque sort of way. It was about a week ago, during the current lull in the Met's operations which permits Miss Bampton to sing one-night stands here and there, and there was no place for a tired soprano to Yepose except the upper berth. » 2 ”

LIKE OTHER cubicles of its kind, this particular berth was made to contain travelers less heroically proportioned and Miss Bampton put her foot down and said, nix, she wouldn’t climb into it. There was a small, rotund conductor present who sympathized and who was extremely grateful that Miss Bampton re-

_frained from. calling down the

wrath of heaven on the railroad, as some artistic travelers are inclined to do under similar circumstances. “He told me,” she said, “that there was a lower berth and that the gentleman who was to inhabit it hadn’t shown up. So I waited in the ladies’ room until we were under way. “Then I found him again and he said, ‘Okay, lady, it's all yours, * and if this gent shows up, I'll tip you off, don’t worry.” I didn't. “I was asleep-for about 10 minutes, I guess, and awoke to a polite rapping at the curtain. It was the conductor. “He said, ‘Okay, lady, you can rest easy now, the gent isn’t coming” So I went back to sleep. But it was nice of him to wake me up to tell me I could go to sleep.” Miss Bampton is proud of the bread she bakes, but she backs off in deference to her husband,

‘Wilfred Pelletier, conductor at the |

a place where you can buy meat in New York, but its exact location is kind of an artistic secret. & 2 » MISS BAMPTON sang “Divinites du Styx” from Gluck’s opera,

“Alceste,”. and “Adieu Forets” from the opera, “Jeanne d’ by Tchaikovsky, in the first half of the program. The “Adieu Forets” aria speaks of young Joan of Arc’s sorrow at leaving her native fields and for ests to go-out and rescue France. in response to a celestial summons. It is hard to imagine the 14-year-old Maid of Orleans be- - coming so dramatic about it, but that’s grand opera, or at least this opera, which has not survived except for this particular excerpt. The second half of Miss Bampton’s program was a delightful group of songs from the “Gitanjali” suite of John Alden Carpenter. They were “When I Bring You Colored Toys,” “The Sleep That Flits on Baby's Eyes” and “Light, My Light.” The orchestra opened the pro- ' gram with the eighth symphony of Beethoven and performed two other works, Ravel's “Le Tombeau de Couperin” and Respight s “The Pines of Rome.” The final pair of subscription concerts will be played March 27 and 28. On Thursday, the orchestra will wind up its pop concert series in a program with Arnaldo Estrella, South American pianist, and the Jndisnapolis symphonic choir. |
