DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am a young girl 20 years of age and I have been married only a few months. My husband was drafted recenily and is in a camp 1200

miles from here. I want to go and live near him but have only $100 to start on. The government has not sent his checks or my allotment through yet. : . I have talked to several people from .this camp and they all say work is plentiful there. My "husband is more than anxious for me to come but wants me to be fairly secure as to finances before I start. That is only natural and I am proud that he wants to protect me from any financial hardship. Should I wait until the govern-

"ment allotment checks reach me, or

should .I start on $100? If I wait

“too long there is a chance that he

may be shipped out, maybe even ‘gcross. I am not afraid of hard- _ ship, I have experienced lots of if, him if “he didn't know I could \ke it. His family and mine vary in their opinions. That's why I want an impartial opinion. I love my husband and I know he loves me. What should I do? ; UNDECIDED. - . «8 8 No Answer—The only mature, real-

« {istic thing to do is to wait until you

have the money you need before you *go 1200 miles away from home. Of ‘course, you and your husband want “to be together. To the irresponsible, “I want” is sufficient reason for doing anything at all, but responsible people wait until they are able -to take care of themselves without depending on others. 4 What a worry it would be to your husband if you were stranded: in ‘town without a dime! His protective attitude toward you indicates a ‘ far deeper love than that of the man who indulges his desires with-

out thought of the future.

‘MRS. HOUSEWIFE IS WAKING UP to the fact that canned goods are so expensive in ration points, that she'd better buy fresh fruits and vegetables ‘if the family is going to get its quota of vital vitamins, And the next lesson she has to learn is how to preserve, while cooking, the vitamin value of fresh foods. For instance, say nutrition specialists of the U. 8S. department of agriculture, some B vitamins (thia- ——————— mine, riboflavin, niacin) escape into the cooking water. That is why Appliqu. ue F 7 ock they recommend that you save the liquid for soups, sauces or-gravies. Heat destroys some vitamins, particularly thiamine and vitamin .C, and foods often lose some vitamins while just waiting to be used. Vitamin A is slowly lost this way, and vitamin C more rapidly.

” ® 2 Vitamin 'First Aid' AS VITAMIN C is the vitamin most damaged by heat and air, special care should be taken of the fruit and: vegetables in which: it is abundant. Here are four “first aid” rules for saving vitamins in food, which the department’s. nutrition specialists recommend you follow: 1. Don’t crush or bruise. 2. Don’t soak. ‘ 3. Keep cold until ready to cook or eat. 4, Use quickly when prepared. Make raw.salad or. slaw at last minute. Vitamin C gets away faster after foods are peeled or cut. ' In cooking vegetables, use as little

water as possible. Add salt to the cooking water at the start. This retards the destruction of vitamin| J N = oF » # $527 Quick Work By ANNE CABOT COOK QUICKLY. I have several dirt - farmer friends. To one of my favorites I : sent the foyr articles by Louis Bromfield, which appeared recently. in the Scripps-Howard newspapers. reply follows: “My Dear Lucia—I have read with considerable interest the articles by Mr, Louis Bromfield concerning farming and the government. assistance or lack of assistance to it. I am wholeheartedly in accord with Mr. Bromfleld’s attitude and statements. I have talked personally with dozens and dozens of farmers in Oklahoma. All, without exception are opposed to the rules and

| regulations imposed ‘upon them by:

the department of ‘agriculture. “To give an example. The office of price administration in’ Washington has set prices on milk but those prices are such that dairy men in Oklahoma are closing out their businesses as rapidly as possible.”

“I. HAVE ATTENDED no less than a dozen such sales=—large ones—in our county-alone. These men were all going out of business. Being a dirt farmer -andsdairyman I know that it is absolutely impossible for a man to buy his feed and sell his milk at a profit. ' In fact, I do not think he can possibly break even and I am talking about good management. It can’t be done. , “I operate a dairy farm as economically and I think as efficiently as possible, giving. it my daily supervision but am steadily losing money. The trouble is easy to locate. “Feed prices have gone sky high, while there is a limitation on milk prices. I have had the matter up with the local OPA office who referred me to the regional office in Dallas, who referred me to Washington. The result is chaos and the closing of dairies. “What can we do about it? The only thing I know is to vote out
