Caught in Searchlight
Squadron Léader E. G. Gilmore said: “We had just. dropped our bombs on ‘Cologne ‘when we were
caught - by the: searchlights ‘and
German antiaircraft fire which blew |
off the inner: starboard propeller; punched ‘holes in the astrogome, ir! the fuselage, the wings, id in the ailerons, as well as throwing the aircraft on its back. All the engines stopped and the plane fell, twisting and turning, rolling ‘over and over, from 18,000 feet to 4000 feet. = Gilmore gave the order to bail out, but changed his mind. * Gunner Loses Chute The rear gunner tried to hack his way through a jammed turret and lost ‘his parachute when. it ripped loose and fell without him.
At, 4000 feet all the landing lights: \
came on, making the plane a targef seemingly impossible to. miss, but two of tne engines started working
right-sidesup and somehow got clear of the searchlights without be-. ing badly hit again. . On the way home a third engine: came to life and helped them out. The master compass was lost and they had to find their way to base ‘with the bombardier’s- compass.
