~ Paul Muni and to the Ambassador for four
By T. R. MOSS
THREE WAR THRILLERS are among other cholce offerings now making the rounds of the neighborhood theaters. “Casablanca,” at the Vogue and Zaring today and through Saturday, was made before American forces entered. the African “white house” and came out just in time to become a windfall for the producers
the occupation of France,
with a love drama interwoven to
hold’ the plot true to the orthodox movie pattern,
“Starred are Humphrey Bo-
.gart, owner of:
“Rick's Cafe Americain”
- where-all of the
plotting takes place, and In- Ne grid Bergman; who enacts the Mr. Bogart role of “Ilsa Lund,” an underground “worker. In an effort to prevent Ilsa and her "associate from securing visas, officers give
them to Rick for safekeeping.
The story becomes tangled when Ilsa, who is married though she thinks she ‘is not, and Rick dis-
_cover that they love edch other. The rest of the picture is devoted “to .the untangling.
“Casablanca” will open at the Fountain Square Saturday to run through Tuesday and at the ‘Speedway and Daisy Sunday to run through Monday. “Silver Queen,” with George Brent and Priscilla Lane, and
“Half Way to Shanghai,” starring
Irene Hervey and Kent Taylor, are at the Fountain Square today and will remain through Friday.

ARMY PLANS TESTS FOR PRE-INDUCTEES
WASHINGTON, March 10 (U. P.). —The war department announced yesterday that, uniform pre-induc-tion examinations, covering general education, will be given certain
classes of 17 to 21 year old students|
and high school graduates throughout the country April 2. Results of the examinations, to be held at thousands of high schools and colleges, will be considered later in selecting youths for assignment to the ‘army’s specialized training program—under which they would be sent to colleges or universities for « further technical training—or to officers candidate schools. :
YANK CAPTURED BY GERMANS HGNORED
ALLIED NORTH AFRICAN HEADQUARTERS, - March 10 (U. P.).—--A distinguished iying cross was awarded yesterday to Maj. David M. Jones, of Winters, Tex. who developed tactics employed in
North Africa by Marauder bomber |
squadrons, and ‘who now is a prisoner of the Germans. Jones was shot down over Bizerte and captured. Medical corps Maj. Harold P.| Tompkins, St. Louis, ‘was awarded | ihe silver star for bravery during al heavy bombing attack in North Africa, when in spite of enemy fire, he went about performing his duties as a medical ‘officer.
Dildos Aa, anois ly Symphony 1885 before it -was completed: . During the summer. of
the woods of the Styrian Alps. ‘Qnie day he returned to find his mountain lodge - on fire: and ‘a woman sitting on the grass nearby, hugging a manuscript to prevent. the wind from blowing its loose sheets away. It was the uncompleted . fourth symphony, Brahms believed that. he was influenced by the character a. ‘the countryside in writing this work, which took two summers in the Alpine vacation spot. = The opening theme is a simple, ‘pastoral ‘melody that stays with ‘you after only ‘a single hearing.
It pervades the entire work 'which .
achieves its strength and individuality simplicity of design: and movement, 2 8 8 RAVEL'S “La Valse, * recorded by the San Francisco symphony orchestra, uncer the direction .of Pierre Monteux, for Victor is supposed to be the most popular work of Maurice Ravel next to the ‘‘Bolero.”
A strenuous groping for the
spirit of Strauss, the waltze is.
violently rhythmical. gliding, it surges. It was written in 1920 after the composer - sketched its outlines during the latter years of the war. It might have been attempt to recapture what was' supposed to have been the easy-going spirit of pre-war capitals in Europe. It opens with a waltze fragment and proceeds to become a series of waltze ideas in a variety of moods.- Ravel himself referred to it as a choreographic poem. Its woodwind opening is quite strange.
VAUGHN MOORE and his band couple two hits from Paramount’s new musical, “Happy-Go-Lucky,” on a new Victor disc. Monroe sings the vocal of “Let’s Get Lost” and Marilyn Duke does the refrain in “Happy-Go-Lucky,” title song. Somewhat solid.
