Hats That Glow in the Dimout Designed to Prevent. Accidents.

- By CORRINNE HARDESTY "7 United Press Staff. Correspondent : y NEW YORK, March 4.—Hats that glow in the night are fashion's latest contribution to the war effort. The night-glowing hats, and bags, belts and’ scarves, were created :by

a nationally known hat designer to

lessness and indifferetice that causes accidents in America’s dimmed-

out cities. For daytime wear the hats look just like any other headgear—just as mad and just as silly. Colors range from white, through pink, yellow, pale greens to navy and fabrics include straw, lace ribbon, synthetic weaves and flowers by ‘the bushel.

Used on Battleships The night-glowing chemical which makes the hat, belt, bag or scarf shine with a soft, luminous whitish light was developed for use on battleships or other places where ordinary illumination was ruled out. The ‘glow is - accomplished - by painting the hat with the chemical, which in.no-way affects the color of the hat and. does. not show in the

daytime. Before putting on the hat, it is held near an ordinary electric light for: a few minutes. Then when the wearer steps out on the dimmed-out street her head glows with a fine

light -visible for 15 or 20 feet, a
