Lieut. Vernon Boehle, Lieut. H. L. Ayres Get Special Medals for Service in the Famous Eagle Squadron Raids.
The R. A. F. paid tribute to the gallant work of two Indianapolis men—Lieut. Vernon A. Boehle and Lieut. H. L.
Ayres—on Thursday.
They were among members of Eagle sqibArons presented with especially struck medallions for their service with the British fighters before the squadrons were trans-
ferred to America’s armed|” forces last September. The presentation was made during a parade at a U. S. army air force fighter station in England. The event was planned to
give hundreds of American army air corps officers and enlisted men an opportunity to hear the tributes to the part they are playing in beating the “Huns’ luftwaffe.” The men were lauded by their own commanding officer, Brig. Gen. Frank O’Hunter, and the R. A. F. fighter command’s chief, Air Marshal Sir Trafford L. Leigh-Mallory.
Parents ‘Thrilled’
Parents of the two Indianapolis men, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Boehle, Southport, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Ayres, 1837 Nowland ave. had “inklings” that their sons were to be given the decorations, although neither of the boys had been able to write much about the coming event.
Of course, it was a thrill to the parents to be given the news by the Indianapolis Times this morning. But the biggest thrill of all, especially to the mothers, was the news that their sons were “still safe” as late as yesterday.
Lieut.- Boehle has been well known locally for his “air-minded-ness.” Ever since he was a child, he has built model airplanes, walking off with trophies in contests all over the country. He won The Indianapolis Times model airplane building contest several years ago. He was a student at St. Catherine's school and worked at the Otis Elevator Co. He brought his own plane and flew frequently at Sky Harbor.

Okla., and sailed early in the year from a Canadian port. He has a brother Wilbur, in Lafayette, and another brother, Anthony, an employee at Allison's. Anthony doesn’t know whether it's possible but he would like nothing better than to have his brother fly in one of the planes powered by an Allison motor, which he had a part in building, Lieut. Ayres’ mother was more excited over the news that her son was safe than she was over the award. She said he attended a British refresher school at Bakersfield, Cal., and received his commission the day before Pearl Harbor. He came home for Christmas and then sailed early in February of last year.
He was graduated from Technical high school, attended Purdue university and worked at L. Strauss and at McQuay-Norris Co.
3d Hoosier Praised
Lieut. R. C. Care of Angola was the third Hoosier honored for R. A. F. service. Air Marshall Leigh - Mallory praised the gallant work of the Eagle squadrons, recalling they had formed part of the 11th group which he had commanded at one time. With their fighter command they shot down 600 planes over France and he revealed for the first time that 170 of the enemy were destroyed during the combined operations in Dieppe last summer when the Eagles played a prominent role. He emphasized the importance of daylight sweeps over Franee. a other occupied countries, saying that if we could not persuade.the luftwaffe fighters to come to England we must hunt them out and destroy them.
“You will never know what it has meant to us to receive from the R. A. F. fully trained operational pilots,” Brig Gene O’Hunter said. “It has formed the nucleus around which we are building our fighting machine. The experience and marvelous training you received from the R. A. F. has enabled us to select men from among you to train and lead other units.” Medals were presented to American fighter pilots who have distinguished themselves operating with the 8th fighter command since its formation five months ago. Among those receiving air medals was Lieut. Donald A. Willis of Leavenworth.

WILLKIE NOTES COLLEGE PERIL
Liberal Education Should Have Definite Part in War Plan.
Alarmed at the conversion of colleges to war needs, Wendell Willkie, writing in the spring issue of “The American Scholar,” makes a plea for the continuity of the liberal arts through the liberal education of the women of America. Asserting that America cannot win a true victory unless there exists in the country a large body of
liberally educated citizens, Mr. Willkie expresses the opinion that “so important are the liberal arts for our future civilization that I feel that education in them should be as much a part of our war planning as the more obviously needed technical training. “There should be some provision in the manpower program for leav-
ing a nucleus in the colleges of
men whose aptitudes qualify them as definitely for our long range needs as, let us say, other men are obviously qualified for medicine.” Preservation of the system of liberal education will make an enormous difference in the moral and human tone of society, not only in America, but throughout civilization, he said.

Hamper Picnics
WASHINGTON, March 1 (U. P.) —1It looks as though the government doesn’t particularly want people to have picnics nowadays. First the office of price administration froze sale of canned meat and other succulent accessories in the same catagory, many of them picnic “musts.” Now the govern-. ment jeopardizes the outdoor consumption of steaks, hamburgers and hot dogs. Charcoal, which is used extensively for outdoor fires, is to be reduced for civilian consumption by-93 per cent. Charcoal for picnics, restaurant cooking and civilian heating must be curtailed sharply in order to insure an adequate supply for essential military and industrial use, the stern war production board order said.
