Bn Feb. 26.—A Rome dispatch to the well-informed Tribune De ‘Geneve goes far toward indicating ‘that war-weary Italy would welcome a compromise peace—if only it could ‘get one. : Obviously quoting Rome political ieircles, the Tribune correspondent istarts by admitting that “direct or indirect” contacts ‘have been estab :lished lately which ‘are amply justi fled by the recent i“changes” in the war situation. It is now more and more obvious dn Rome, the cor‘respondent says, that the RussiangEg¥&y ‘successes have ereated a ‘har- Mr Ohall mony” of interests between the allies and the axis. By the allies, of course, Rome means the United ‘States and England.
Cite Counter Balance
* “The allies,” the dispatch continues, “would like to create a counter balance to Russian predominance in Europe but they cannot, Accept the collaboration of axis political, regimes toward this end, while axis circles are naturally convinced that their regimes provide the: yery counter balance required. The * new community of interests now “existing” between the allies and. the axis does in no way mean that ‘the axis is “entreating” for peace, but the allies should realize the * situation and “refrain” from opening 8 second front in Europe, the dispatch says. Rome is viewing with the keenest interest the presence in the Italian capital .of : Archbishop Francis J. Spellman, the correspondent also reveals. The interest of this Rome dispatch les mot only in. its contents but also in the fact that it has passed the - rigorous Fascist censors and thus can be taken as forwarding information that the Fascist leaders, see no harm in publishing abroad.
RAID EFFECTS ON ‘GERMANY ADMITTED
LONDON, Feb. 26 (U. P.)—The A Nazis have been forced to acknowledge the devastating effects of the allied bombing raids’ on Germany during 1943 to a far greater extent than the Goebbels propaganda echnique has permitted in the past. ~The Hamburg newspaper, Hamburger Fremdenblatt, recently included among its death notices a communal two-column, black-bor-dered announcement that “numerous” citizens had been killed in an air attack, it was learned today. “The announcement listed the names of 51 casualties, mostly family groups.

By Science Service WASHINGTON, Feb. 26. — How much of the pre-war city of Rabaul in New Britain is still standing, after all the recent bombings by American and Australian aircraft, is a guestion. What happened to the 200: white inhabitants of the city when-it was taken by the Japanese is also ‘a question. the city and included practically the entire white population on the island. Pe Most of the British and Australian government officials and employees left Rabaul in mid-1941, when Lae on the mainland became the capital of Northeast New Guinea and the islands included with it

under the mandate conferred upon Australia. Traders, businessmen and plantation owners remained.
A large number of the 1400 Australian troops forced to retreat by the Japs in 1942 took to the dense jungle and found their way back to Australia, . The fate of the few hundred Germans living in Rabaul need cause no worry. New Britain is a crescent-shaped island stretching from east to west, with its eastren extremity hooked
northward until it almost touches
the equator, and its western end within 75 miles of the New Guinea mainland. : The island is approximately 300 miles in length and has an average

width of 28 miles. AS far as known it has never been crossed from north to south by any white man because of its dense jungles and the high central mountain range extending its entire length. The mountains are not as high as those of New Guinea, but there are a few peaks more than 7000 feet high and one 7500 feet. Included are several active and several volcanoes. The constant light and smoke from one still active near Rabaul has given excellent assistance to the allied aircraft, serving as a beacon visible for many miles. South Pacific. It is an excellent;
base for military activities because’ it has many good harbors, particularly on its northern coastline. Rabaul has one of the best of them. It was largely because of this good harbor that Rabaul was selected to

It is because of this German ownership that the archipelago, which includes New Britain, was called Bismarck after the founder of the German Empire.
