YANKS ‘SOLD’ ON BOMBING BY DAY
Promise Healthy Dividends In Better Weather With
More Planes.
"By WALTER CRONKITE United Press Staff Correspondent AN AMERICAN ARMY BOMBER BASE IN ENGLAND, Feb. 25.—The men who have been flying the fortresses over enemy territory for _ three months still believed today that daylight bombing is a most essential part of air warfare and that they have the best instruments 80 far devised for the job. They feel that they have gone through several months of hell to pioneer daylight precision bombing, and resent criticism from unqualified sources.
» They point out that pin-point bombing, as opposed to British area bombing, is possible only during daylight, but can give a healthy return on the investment in planes. So far, they admitted, daylight bombing hasn’t paid off as well as it should, but given three factors, ' they believe they can rule the skies over Europe and reduce Adolf Hitler's war industries to rubble.
Spring Weather Will Help
The three factors are (1) more fortresses and Liberators; (2) fight- ~ er protection, and (3) better weather. All three are promised this spring. Fortresses and fighters are supposed to be en route to this theater, more powerful fortresses and new fighters capable of accompanying them all the way to the target and back. Capt. Billy Southworth Jr, son of the St. Louis Cardinal manager, and a veteran of 11 missions over Europe, said more fortresses alone would answer the problem. “But give us fighters and weather and we can bomb at will and the Germans will never lay hands on us,” he said.
Losses Don’t Rise With Numbers
“We've suffered losses, because, first of all, we were pioneering, and, secondly, we haven't had enough fortresses. “If you send five fortresses against -one target, the chances are that all five will be knocked down. But send 250 against the same target,

“When we can do that, we'll dis-|e
perse the Luftwaffe and the damage to our fortresses will be almost nothing. We'll be able to bomb without Serious resistance,” First Lieut. George Mackin of Portland, Ore., said. Mackin is the assistant operations officer here. “When we can hit several targets on the same day, we’ll saturate the Luftwaffe and knock down more Focke-Wulf 190’s than ever,” Lieut. Col. George L. Robinson of Los Angeles, the operations officer, said. “So far, German fighters. have been able to gang up on us and naturally we've had our losses.”
Nazis Gang Up on Us
The problem of German fighters ganging up on fortresses will be solved by long-range, high altitude American fighter planes, which will be operating before many more missions, Thus far, the weather has been a thorny problem. American fliers believe winter conditions in this theater cannot be licked, but they expect the lessons they learned this winter to help them in ‘the spring, when their targets are clearly visible. Actually,
fortresses’ raids on Wilhelmshaven, Lorient and St. Nazaire show bomb hits cleanly across the target. That is not aiming at the target area, but at the target itself. { Robinson pointed out -that daylight bombing to this winter, even . though inaccurate, has kept many ' German fighter planes tied up in © Western Europe.
Deny “Qver-Enthusiasm”
Fortress pilots and bombers are angry over charges that their claims of enemy fighters shot down are “fantastic and unchecked.” They agreed that there might _ have been some over-enthusiasm in earlier raids, but now the bomber command leans over backward. + To claim an enemy fighter plane shot down, it myst be seen to explode in the air, crash, or the pilot bail out. Crews can't watch all ~ these things in the middle of a.Jbattle, and hence gunners don’t bother to report many planes almost certainly destroyed. Fortress crews laugh off the contention that they are not. trained for night flying. . They sbent®c almost ‘half their training time in the United States Bractiolne night flying. Admittedly, the fortresses are not equipped for night bombing, but why should ‘they be? Their mission is bombing hile the sun is up.
