. NEW YORK, Fe) 18 (U. P).— Lieut, Channing B." Emberson, a ‘native of Oakland, Cal, who has Sunk three axis submarines—two of them in one day—told the New York World-Telegram in an interview that he never had met a hero but that he hoped to some day. “The boys don’t see it when they're called heroes,” he said. “They figure everybody would do the same things if they had the

The World-Telegram said the sinkings occurred months ago but that publication of the story was delayed because of the navy’s desire to keep information from the enemy. Lieut. Emberson is flight leader of a medium bomber squadron based at Mitchell field. He said that patrolling for’ submarines is.“a game to see who can look closest the longest. We fly hour after hour, eyes sharp and head on a swivel. Sometimes we get bored, but we know the subs are waiting for that. We have to be as alert the last hour Las the first one.”

sian army drives west and south, it is cutting the railroad network on which the Nazis based the supply of a large section of their long. front. And perhaps equally important, it e is capturing quani tities of rolling stock and locomotives. It is difficult always to. reconcile totals to prevent duplication, but on the basis of the communiques of this 5 month alone, it Hi appears that the David Nichol ggviet army has seized about 140 locomotives and more than 50 entire trains, often fully loaded. : The capture or destruction of six German armored trains also is rerted. The final cleanup of the Stalingrad area produced about one-third of this valuable booty. The summary communique announced the capture, in the last phase of the offensive, of 56 engines and 1125 cars.

Nazi Cost Heavy

The speed of the offensive west of Voronezh also cost the Germans heavily in rolling stock. South of Rostov, the capture of this kind of equipment apparently has been less frequent, but now, as the drive moves through the industrial Donets .basin, figures are mounting steadily. One of the richest hauls appears to have occurred at Krasnoarmeiskoe, only 90 miles north of the Azov sea, certainly one of the most important points as far as the fate of the German forces west of Rostov is concerned. On different days, the Soviets reported the capture there of 26 locomotives and 500 cars.

Guerrillas Busy

Guerrilla bands, meanwhile, are taking a steady toll of railway equipment behind the German lines. : Derailing of trains is one of their favorite activities. Reports announced so far this month alone credit them with smashing 61 locomotives and more than 800 cars. Most of these wrecks occurred. in January. The significance of these flgures lies in the acknowledged strain under which Nazi communications already are placed. Railroads admittedly are one of Hitler's big problems. He has already stripped Europe completely of all types of equipment in order to keep the Nazi troops moving, The Russian army includes special railway troops whose job it is to destroy workshops and equipment and generally make roads unusable during retreat. Now they are rebuilding at a phenomenal speed in the wake of the advancing armies. Even during the days of the rapidest advance, trains are operated to within a few miles of the front line,
