SNOW FOR ST. VALENTINES

“or the release of vital war information. It’s Just a suggestion for a dessert

to serve come Sunday.

_ THE GASOLINE AND tire short--age has brought up many & new ‘problem. In order to get back and

forth from defense plants the work-

ers have very sensibly organized ‘driving clubs so that all those living in the same neighborhood can ride to work together, sharing their cars and gasoline as an emergency ‘measure. To my astonishment this simple and practical arrangement has brought a flood of letters from jealous wives, who do not like to have their husbands riding in the same : ear with working girls. If the men git in the front seat the situation is bearable, but if a husband sits beside a girl during the drive, it often causes serious family ructions. At first glance the problem seems too trivial to deserve mention but after reading the letters of the dis- ; ‘ turbed wives one is obliged to recog‘nize that the driving clubs ‘have ‘caused and are causing many a fam-

4ly crisis. One man remarks that:

he rather would make $10 a weel

than be obliged to cope with his

‘wife in her present frame of mind. I have on my desk several letters ‘from agonized wives who cannot eat or sleep or go about their duties in a normal manner because of their all-consuming fears. Most of them ‘claim that they have had happy ‘marriages until now but cannot adJust to the new situation. To them the most disturbing ‘thing of all is the comments of ‘other wives whose husbands do not ride with women and who claim they | \would. not stand for the sit“uation under any circumstances. * Such a narrow point of view is as frrational as it is distressing. Security in marriage is not achieved “by hiding the husband from all outside contacts with women. . Women work side by side with ‘men in all factories and offices day in and day out. The time spent in riding back and forth from work is only one hour out of eight or 10. ¥ The trouble is that it is an hour “which the wife knows about. What is even more significant, it is an ‘hour which other meddlesome wives know about. . Only a very insecure personality could be disturbed by so simple an loccurence. A marriage which has Joi “lasted over a number of years is ‘not going to crash because a man ‘rides to work with another woman. «The trouble, if there is any, lies in ,dissatisfactions - within the home and not in the external circumFor every woman who wrings her +hands there must be hundreds of ‘others who have remained serene «under thé same conditions. The . problem lies inside the jealous ‘woman. The most charitable view of such ‘useless jealousy is that it is a sort “of illness which requires heroic ‘effort on the part of the personality ‘who suffers from it. Probably the .best cure is for a woman to keep ‘as busy as possible doing something «as useful as possible, and to avoid 3 ‘neighbors and friends who suffer ‘from the same unpleasant affliction. : JANE JORDAN,

Cleaning the China

For Festive Meals

Setting the festive board for the boy home on furlough calls for getting out the very best china. And it’s surprising just how much dust can collect -on unused dishes in a very short time. A few days beforehand, get them down from the closet, swish them in foamy soapsuds, rinse in clear hot water, dry with lintless towels. To keep from chipping, place a folded towel in dishpan and wash only a few dishes at a time. If dishes are gold decorated, remember to use only a mild soap. Strong soaps may remove gold, which with careful use, should last a life-

time.

After that, there was no stopping the inseparable twosome.

The Question Box

Q—Within a month we are cele= brating our 15th wedding annivers sary. Have you a suggestion for entertaining a large circle of friends on such an occasion? A—The crystal wedding is a suit= able time for an informal evening at home which is, incidentally splendid way to entertain a large group of friends. The invitations may be written on frosted cards. The covering for the table may be either lace or linen; the cen piece may be roses or other flower placed on a mirror or in a la crystal bowl. Use glass candlesti

glass dishes, etc. Sandwiches, olives, nuts, punch or an ice, wedding cake and coffee may be served.

Q—Are tin cans wanted for their tin or steel content? A—For both, : !

lected to harmonize and set off the hair. Unlike other types, they never select a dress or make-up shade simply because it is new or “popular. ® 8 ® THIS DOESN'T restrict the redhead to two or three colors in clothes or monotonous make-up. There is at least one shade of almost every color—even pink— which she can wear to advantage. Probably she won't like a cyclamen, but will find a soft shell-pink quite right. If she has thé creamy, translu-cent-looking skin' that the luckiest possessors of red hair have, she has another striking quality to dramatize by the same technique—that is, avoiding objects and colors which might take attention away from the feature to be emphasized. Her make-up is applied ever so lightly, especially her face powder.| It is of the lightest possible .tex= ture, is dusted on ever so thinly. Likewise, her cheeks are tinted, not painted; and her lips have a fresh and dewy look.
